iPod Touch 4G: is there FM tuner infrastructure?

Hi there iFixitians,

I've read the breakdown:

http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPod-Touc...

But I see no explicit mention of hardware present or absent, that's necessary for tuning into FM.

I realise software support still needs to be there even if the hardware is. But it'd be nice to know (w/certainty) if all the necessary hardware's there.

I've seen plenty of users speculate in forums, but none *really* seem to know what they're talking about.

If anyone can point directly to which sections prove/disprove that all the necessary hardware's there, I'd be most appreciative.

I believe it's all there for the iPhone 4 but support hasn't been added to iOS, I suspect the iTouch 4 would be much the same.

Thank-you!

Update

Kyle thank-you very much for getting back to me, tis appreciated!

Just to double-check... Did you observe "anything" about the WiFi/BT chipset or it's antenna infrastructure in this tear-down?

Would it be possible for me to look at prior tear-downs, see what you fingered as FM w/lack of appropriate antenna infrastructure, & then go back to this one & infer the same from your pictures?

Or are there not the right pictures in this tear-down to ascertain that?

Thanks again!

We didn't ID the WiFi/ Bluetooth chipset on that machine, which is the part that has supported FM in the past. Apple has shipped a number of devices with chips that support FM, but no radio antennas.

So the short answer is: we don't know because we didn't investigate this specifically, but from past experience the odds are very low that it has hardware support and Apple neglected the software.

Update

The wireless chipset was under a soldered EMI shield, so we didn't investigate. Unsoldering the shields usually kills the board, and we wanted to keep our iPod functional. Someone would need to unsolder that shield to find out what chipset Apple is using and whether it supports FM.

Well, if it does in-fact have hardware support...

I guess the only way we'll ever know, is if Apple suddenly decides to add fw/software support!?

Thanks for the explanation, very much appreciated!

Didn't see it earlier because I didn't get an email about your response.

All the best.
