Hi @danj ,
-I know I’m new here still but @kristen and I have been talking about this issue a lot lately and we’ve spent some time asking questions around the iFixit staff to help solve this problem. First and foremost, I think that it’s important to remember that no matter where a replacement laptop battery is purchased, a 100% success rate is not possible. Thankfully, as a company we are able to stand behind our products, and while we do have a high success rate, we recognize that it’s not perfect. If there are any issues, we will always help our community members out by refunding the cost or replacing a faulty battery and offering a one year warranty beyond that.

As bad batteries do happen, we appreciate when our customer service team is informed because it helps us to buy better products. When a battery is faulty, we make note on the batch and forward that information on to our supplier so that we can prevent the problems further up the ‘food chain.’ Sometimes customers are turning to our Answers forum because they trust the advice that they receive from our 400,000+ rep club before or during their communications with Customer Service.
All in all, you’re absolutely right that batteries are a massive part of our sales. As we are moving batteries in this volume, even a small percentage of problems (which, statistically, will happen) appears to be an alarming amount. Also, we track these numbers in batteries per model so, a battery for a mid 2012 MacBook Pro will be tracked separately from a mid 2015 MacBook Pro. We see these as separate issues whereas the community just sees it as a general “iFixit has MacBook battery issues.”
Thank you for all you do in our community, you make a huge difference!
