So it turns out that overall you're correct in assuming that disconnecting the battery should always be a priority, but Google Pixels (at least the ones mentioned) are built in a way where you can't actually disconnect the battery until after you've removed the screen. The motherboard cover/mid-frame has to be removed (see [link|https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Google+Pixel+6+Battery+Replacement/148798#s306576|here|new_window=true] and [link|https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Google+Pixel+7+Pro+Battery+Replacement/154517#s321571|here|new_window=true]) to get to the battery connector. You also can't actually lift the motherboard cover as long as the screen is connected.
