How come notifications aren't working?

I will get emails about people talking in a conversation that I am involved in but not always notifications. I can't check my email all the time because it lags out and/or freezes sometimes so I rely on the notification to reply back to people. That way I can fix peoples' problems quicker. Wondering if I am doing something wrong
