Change in device description very tedious

I noticed tonight that you changed the way we select/correct a device. Neat and tidy but not very user friendly. This will only work if we now what is included into the subsections. For example, on this question https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/4342... I was going to change the device to Lawn Tractor but cannot even find the submenu for that. Possible that I am just getting to old for all those neat changes :-)? Nah.....@sam @evan you are going to be busy cleaning those messes :-))

Update (10/20/2017)

@evan I've tried but it looks like I have trouble finding Riding Mower or Lawn tractor. If I search under Craftsman I got a saw :-)

Hey @oldturkey03! Did you try using the search feature at the top of the device picker?

I'd probably put this under Lawn Mower as a stop-gap measure. It obviously isn't correct but it's better then nothing.

by

@nick no it is not. Two wrongs don't make a right and let iFixit make the decision on how to categorize it. We at least have to give people a chance to work kinks out.

by

The search bar should enable you to either find a device that already exists (like Mower) or add the question to a new device (like Lawn Tractor, which currently doesn't exist).

by

@kyle sorry but it does not. When I type Lawn Tractor it finds the Tractor part and adds that as the device. There is no option to add a device for us.

by

@evan @entendu so I changed a few devices and it works reasonably well for when the categories and the actual device is categorized. Biggest issue that remains is what to do when the device is a. not listed or b. the device has no category.

Hi All, I think this is a bug! We absolutely have a Riding Mower category within Lawnmower! https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Riding_Mow...

Seems like it doesn't have the "I have this" button, so maybe it got left out of the schema?

@sam @kyle @evan okay fixed. It is all there and no bugs. I need to start paying more attention. Thanks to @sam I just re-checked the image I left with my original question and noticed that it actually says "Riding Mower" in the far right column !!!! I assumed (yes I know what Assume means and it did it this time;-) there was no more than 4 column to get to the device but it just keeps on going. Good job on your part and it does work pretty slick.

by

Yep I just re-checked that myself, we just collapse the "mower" part of the Riding Mower, oops! Good catch!

I have this issue now too. Try to change the device from camera to DxO ONE on this post. Because the device has no category, it can't be found even by searching for the name. Right now it's impossible to change it to that device until it is put under a category. By the way, why can only admins change the category? At least the creator should be able to change it.

@pccheese otherwise it would be a mess. Leave the superpowers to TPTB :)

by

@oldturkey03 But the page creator? I created that device page, but I can't change it from a stub or put it under a category. The admins typically don't get around to these things, so we need to be able to put it under a category.

by

@pccheese that's okay grasshopper. Admin's will get to it, just bear with them. You and I know they are busy. Remember that the categorization of the device will come in handy to future answer seekers, not the current OP or the ones that answer. Keep on answering away......:-)

The more I see unspecific/wrong devices listed in a question the more ingenious I think this new system is. But the problem remains: give us the option to use the old lookup tool, maybe small but present.

@entendu Fix this for us. Dank.
