helpfull vs not helpful

When you ask was this section/resolution; etc "helpful, I assumed that was to narrow the subject/answer of a given topic. I thought that was a tool to help someone-else further "investigate" their own issue. I don't understand why you handle this response, (choosing "not helpful) as a negative "rating" of the author of the resolution. That seems like a rather closed minded approach. As another user with a similar yet, obviously, slightly different issue (therefore the resolution was not "helpful" to me), would like/expect to see, a list of other links to similar issues. Instead I start over, looking for a helpful resolution to me. Surely folks don't take it personally when their "helpful to many" resolution, doesn't help everyone.

@nick, why did you flag this as spam/offesive? Seems he's just asking a confusingly worded question.

Fair point! I can see how, out of context of the site, you might think that.

I understand what you're saying. Answers are clearly helpful or unhelpful, but the voting should be interpreted in the context of the original question. It either solves the question being posed, or it does not.

Being positive is always better anyway. If you find several answers useful, vote them up! If one didn't help you out, you're welcome to not vote.

In my opinion, If a post seems helpful with good info and descriptive I mark it as helpful. If a answer is ridiculous, like this one here: https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/2370... I say No thats not helpful at all. another example I just made up is the question specifically states a toaster is plugged in and in answers someone says "make sure it is plugged in" that would get a downvote from me. Although maybe I overuse upvotes. 48 in a month may be too much... Eh Heck. I'm optimistic.

@captainsnowball nothing wrong with upvoting answers that are helpful. Remember, there are more ways than one to approach any problem. So you may find more than one answer that you believe to be helpful. It is okay to upvote. I reserve downvotes for those answers that are of no value to the original question and/or blatantly wrong. I do not delete those since I feel that the OP of that answer may believe it to be true, even if everybody thinks it to be false. We do not want to turn into censors. Use upvotes frequently since it is most often the only reward one gets for a lot of research etc., use downvotes sparingly.
