Interesting tidbit on iPhone batteries! Check it out (Updated!)

So it turns out Apple has been messing with the power logic slowing down older phones so they don't go into a power shutdown event.

Should be free if they think they can get out of those lawsuits, but that is cheap!

Here's a tidbit on the 'others' Samsung and LG don’t throttle their phones like Apple does.

I love this line! "The battery might burst into flames, but at least you get a full-powered CPU"

by

@danj Except for the Note 7 incident, exploding batteries are very rare, and in my opinion not a very big problem. I would way rather have a fully functioning phone with a 00.000002% percent chance of an exploding battery, than a throttled phone with 00.000001% chance of exploding.

Also, the battery thing may just be cover-up story.

We had been trying to track this issue down for awhile! We just posted a blog post about it, too.

Here's a question @sam - If someone replaces their battery with a new one will iOS go back to normal mode? If it doesn't then I have a bone to pick with Apple!

Than might be a way to increase sales ;-}

by

As long as everything goes well, it should! The phone should read a full battery and be happy to serve unthrottled!

I'm just glad I was able to use my iP4 for 5-6 years without running into battery degradation that was too severe. On the original battery, no less. The battery started to cause power issues in ~4 years and I just reconnected it as needed. I never replaced it because the iPhone 4 is so slow today.

I think Apple cheaped out on the batteries with the 5/s/6/s and newer phones.

by

Any chance google does this too? Just before my Nexus 6 shut down recently it wasn't running like a spring chicken anymore... I'm wondering if this will improve with the new battery I ordered, if the new battery even fixes it...

@pccheese - Goodpoint!

@sam do you know if other phones do the same thing? Maybe this needs a bit of research.

I had speed issues with my iPhone 4 16GB with iOS 7, but I attribute that more to the single core processor and abysmal RAM then the battery. I no longer use the phone because the battery causes device problems and the phone is 7 years old at this point (I stopped using it at ~5 years) so I certainly got my money's worth out of mine.

The 4/4s should have never exceeded iOS 6. The problem is keeping the phone there will kill your app compatibility since Apple uses numbers to nudge developers to drop old OSes and make the user upgrade for app support.

The iphone 4/4s actually makes a great iPod, and when jailbroken can do a lot more useful things than a fully operational iOS 11 device.

The problem is when these phones start having problems, they're usually more expensive to repair then buying a 5/5s.

I had to put mine down because the battery was beginning to show problems in regards to the phone turning on. I had to reseat it to get around that problem at times (which wasn't practical).

Oh look! this probably made diagnosing battery issues on ifixit easier!

"Early in 2018, we will issue an iOS software update with new features that give users more visibility into the health of their iPhone’s battery, so they can see for themselves if its condition is affecting performance."

I'm surprised iFixit hasn't mentioned the iP4 battery.

Granted it's already under $29 (and most people with a 4 don't bother because of how unusable the phones are) but you'd think they'd plug it since they did it for the 4s. I'm more surprised they still sell parts for the 4/4s.
