Where do you go for parts now that RadioShack is gone?

One of the main reasons I abandoned soldering is where to get parts. I’ve been giving up on a few projects and having the thrown out or never fixed because I can’t get parts. Where do you go for parts since RadioShack is mostly closed everywhere.

@captainsnowball not sure what is available in your area. I can tell you that there is not much going on in my area and I rely on Digikey.com, Mouser.com as well as Jameco.com. I do scour independent electronic parts houses and always get more of what I think I need. That way I have built up plenty of inventory.

For components like electrolytic capacitors what I'll do is buy them in capacitor mix kits; essentially bulk purchasing. I'll take a list of what I need and then see if I can find them in a kit with everything I need and then some for other jobs. However, that isn't always possible; when it isn't I will buy what I can in bulk and then get the parts I can't get as part of a kit individually.

For tools I usually get them from Amazon, iFixit or Walmart. Back when I had a local RadioShack I just brought the list of parts I need and then bought what I needed there and then bought the rest they didn't have on Amazon.

@nick, mainly the problem is I cannot find new capacitors the original capacitor value.

25V 1000uF (x2)

10V 1000uF (x1)

25V 220uF (x2)

Those are the factory original parts. You're having a hard time finding them because those values are obsolete for most applications.

Save your time and substitute them as I did for mine. If you can't find the substitute parts, let me know and I'll change those. The only one I didn't substitute is the 10V 1000uF since I could find it at the time.

Ebay sellers have all the old Radio Shack house brands. Check there. I personally bought some rechargeable batteries and old tips for a universal power charger.

The only thing RadioShack was good for is electronic parts, honestly. Their other stuff was mostly overpriced for what you get.

@nick do you have Fry's Electronics in your area? They actually have some great electronic components in stock and online.

There are none in my state, so no.

closest one to me is in illinois. I live in MA.

I'm not revealing where I live, so that's why I left it at "none in my state".

Sears is also like RadioShack in that they should have died as a company years ago but somehow keep coming back.

by

@nick, funny you say that, but have you seen how many posts on Kenmore appliances there are?

The only good thing about Sears/Kmart is their hand tools. Their multimeters are the averaging Extechs with the reduced warranty. Sears warrants for one year while Extech warrants for 1-3 years as a general rule (1 year for averaging/3 years for True RMS).
