Net Neutrality: One more senate vote

Honestly, I am very proud of all you ifixit staff for donating to save Net neutrality. Thank you for helping America out. But onto the main issue now, we need one more vote to save net neutrality.

Update (03/01/2018)

Just go this text:

It's happening! During our day of action, Congress introduced CRA resolutions to save net neutrality. Can you chip in $5 to help pass them?

I reply:

How

response:

We're suggesting $30 but whatever you can chip in is helpful. http://bit.ly/2F2ntOh . Thanks!

Update (03/07/2018)

Just got this email:

Aiden,

This is bad. We’re so close to passing a Senate resolution to block the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality, but I checked the numbers and there just aren’t enough people contacting their lawmakers this week.

Key senators could be deciding right now whether or not to support the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to save net neutrality. Click here to contact yours!

TAKE ACTION

I get it. It feels like we’ve been fighting this repeal of net neutrality forever. But we also have more momentum now than we’ve ever had before.

Washington just became the first U.S. state to enact its own net neutrality law in defiance of the FCC,1 and millions of people have taken action since the repeal.2

But this week the flood of emails and phone calls to Congress is in danger of slowing to a trickle unless everyone reading this takes action right now. Even if you’ve emailed or called before, it’s important to do it again now that the CRA resolutions have been introduced.

Click here tell your senators to vote to save net neutrality!

Taking action takes less than two minutes. There are still dozens of senators that haven’t announced yet how they’ll vote.

We need every single one of them to be hearing from constituents every day between now and a Senate vote. Please forward this email widely and take action now!

Tell your senators to vote for the CRA resolution to block Ajit Pai’s repeal of net neutrality!

TAKE ACTION

We’ll keep you posted as the vote approaches.

P.S. I published an op-ed in NBC News yesterday about all the momentum we have for net neutrality in the courts, in the states, and in Congress. Check it out here!

Aiden,

This is a disaster. Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) indicated for weeks that he was considering becoming the 51st vote that we need to pass a Senate resolution to block the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality.

But now he just turned around and betrayed the entire Internet by instead introducing legislation that would kill net neutrality, while pretending he’s trying to save it.1

Kennedy’s bill is a companion to one proposed by Marsha Blackburn, one of the most notoriously corrupt members of Congress who has taken more than $600,000 from the telecom industry, and has been on the wrong side of every Internet freedom issue since SOPA.2

The bill would ban states from enacting their own net neutrality protections, like Washington and Oregon just did, and would legalize paid prioritization, opening the floodgates for Internet providers to impose outrageous new fees, charge tolls for Internet fast lanes, and stick the rest of us in the slow lane.

Kennedy’s betrayal puts us in crisis mode. There are still 8 other senators who are undecided, and now we need to dramatically scale up our campaign to get them on our side and make sure they don’t sign on to Kennedy’s trojan horse bill instead.

Will you chip in to help us throw everything we’ve got at the remaining undecided senators who could help save net neutrality?

DONATE

What happened in Louisiana shows the raw power of companies like Verizon and Comcast. They’re pouring millions and millions of dollars into lobbying. They’re funding astroturf operations that are flooding the media with misleading op-eds and advertisements. They’re bribing politicians with massive campaign contributions.

It’s clear that their well-funded efforts worked on Senator Kennedy, but that doesn’t mean that the fight is over.

The ISPs are throwing so much money at this fight because they’re scared of us. They see the massive momentum that we have, with tech companies and public interest groups filing lawsuits, dozens of states considering net neutrality resolutions, and polls that show an overwhelming majority oppose the FCC’s repeal.

They should be scared. We’re focused, determined, and strategic, and we’re about to unleash a massive amount of pressure on the remaining undecided senators to make sure we win. But we can’t do it without your help.

Will you chip in to fight the lobbyists and save net neutrality?

DONATE

The battle for the net continues. Thanks for all you do,

P.S. Here’s a blog post explaining the substantive issues with Senator Kennedy’s anti-net neutrality bill. Spread it far and wide so people don’t get fooled by this sneaky attack on the open Internet.

Aiden,

This email is really important. We’re at a pivotal moment in the net neutrality fight and we need everyone to understand what’s going on.

Now that the CRA resolutions to overturn the FCC’s net neutrality repeal have been introduced in the Senate and House, lobbyists for Comcast and Verizon have gone into overdrive. Their plan is to co-opt the momentum behind the net neutrality movement, and push bad legislation that kills the open Internet while claiming to save it.

Unfortunately, their plan is starting to work. Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) just filed an ISP-approved bill in the Senate that violates a fundamental principle of net neutrality because it would legalize paid prioritization. It would also override state-level net neutrality laws and further stifle the FCC’s authority to go after ISP abuse.1, 2
