Magnetized tools shipped to me by ifixit.

I was using the tools ifixit sent me to open an external hard drive, to my surprise, the tools were magnetized! The screws all clung to the screwdriver? I hope they have not damaged my hard drive.

The magnetism issue stems back to the days when we used floppy disks because those could be erased with a screwdriver sized magnet. Because of that, the industry has feared magnetized tools ever since.

Once we moved on from floppy disks, this was no longer an issue since a hard drive requires a much larger magnet and prolonged exposure to be affected. The magnet in a screwdriver will not harm a hard drive. If it did, I would need a new hard drive for my laptop because I use magnetic tools. With that being said, keep the sheet magnet on the screwdriver case away for good measure. It will probably be fine, but it has much more magnetic force then a screwdriver.
