IMPORTANT - Looks like the new iOS has an issue with 3rd party batts!

@sam & @kyle

Something is brewing with iOS 11.3 release as there are many reports of 3rd party batts failing to work with the new 'Battery Health' feature.

Here's someone who has posted a question which outlines just the IFIXIT posts: IMPORTANT - Clarity for all the battery problems!

Someone at IFIXIT needs to double check the IFIXIT batts and respond to this post.

@kyle - Thanks!

I just installed it on my iPhone 7+ to check out the Battery Health' feature. I still have an original battery.

It does take time for the battery usage to fill in. To get the Usage & Standby values you need to fully charge the phone. Still waiting for the charge cycle to finish to see what it does.

Update: It just completed 90% and now both fields have 0 min present letting it charge to 100%

When installing the battery IFIXIT, does the "Battery Health" function show the battery status? Or these batteries, too, like the Chinese with AliExpress do not show the state in "Battery Health".

Howdy, Dan!

Thanks for your post!

We will definitely be keeping our eyes on 11.3 to see how this turns out. We are aware that Apple's latest update includes a beta release of the Battery Health feature, and some customers have already reported the same scenario with their device. It is our current understanding that this feature may not function with our batteries as they are not manufactured by Apple. That being said, iOS 11.3 is so new that it is possible there will be a patch coming soon that may correct this.

I'm sure you know that we encountered a similar issue in the last big update where we saw a rise in customers who purchased LCD/Digitizers from us report sudden touch response issues after updating their phones to iOS 11.2. This even affected users who had never replaced components on their device. Apple later rolled out an update that corrected this issue.

We have only heard from a handful of customers about this issue so far, so either it's not affecting every iFixit customer or only a handful care enough to contact us about it. Still, we'll be collecting reports from customers that have encountered this issue and will be working to resolve any issues with the functionality of their battery.

As always, we hope customers contact our Support team directly via help.ifixit.com so that we can do our best to assist!

@kadan Ive had 11.3 for months. There’s already been new patch’s on the beta. My iPhone battery works fine but its a Apple battery.

by

@paperboypaddy - It was just the Beta releases you had. Apple delayed it's release as they wanted to add in Battery Health after all of the noise of performance loss after the older update that addressed the crashing issues. Even still the function is still Beta! So Apple could still address the 3rd party batteries issues. We'll need to wait and see I guess.

by

@danj Ok. Beta work great for me. If there’s a bug I report it.

We've already corrected the issue with our manufacturing so newer stock of batteries will not have the issue with Battery Health . It's unclear if an update to iOS will come along and fix it. Apple has released patches that have solved issues like this before but we don't have any insight into that. As of right now we do not have a way to update the firmware on batteries we've already sold. We're looking into that but we're not sure if it's even possible to do so. Customers that have concerns can contact support@ifixit.com

With the current trend by Apple of building products so they cannot be repaired by third parties or third party parts, do you really think this is a mistake?

Don't be surprised when Apple calls it a "bug" to hide it, either. I'm calling it now.

Mayer, I would not be the least bit surprised to learn that this feature will never be functional with aftermarket batteries. That is, until thousands of people gripe at them to include aftermarket battery support.

by

It's a feature, not a bug.
