what's the difference between repair related and software related?

I think people are too quick to dismiss software related questions , where is the fine line of repair/sustainability and preventing use of landfill?

people are told their software question is off topic/not repair related for some devices ,and yet lots of questions about updating to os 10.x.y and upgrading ram get answered. surely if someone can't use their camera to its full potential because they cant remove photo's from hard drive is no different to someone with a kernal panic/ jailbreak problem/lost file who might discard their device as broken or useless?

Well, the official goal of answers is to prevent electronics from getting to the landfills, so, say my laptop's screen is broken, and I want to figure out how to use VNC to run it headless (Very software-y). If I didn't run it headless, the laptop would be useless and might as well be thrown out. Thats a good example of software related repair.

That being said, I do believe though that we can help others who aren't strictly repair related. Such as, "How do I move images from the internal memory of my camera to my SD card?". Maybe we can have a section where its not all repair related but more like... general device questions?

I think we need to be more consistent and fair with what we are disregarding as not repair related. Modding computers to stop waste of money on a new system is no different to sorting out which ink for printer refills (preventing wasteful use of cartridges) or internal memory on camera questions.

Agreed on the consistent and fair part. We don't want to be like Apple's App Store now do we? :P

Yeah Gabe's got it, I mean I say it's on topic when it's like, how to I save the music from my iPod, but if it's like "how do i convert a file" or something like that, please don't encourage those and vote.

Sometimes it takes me hours to determine if a malfunctioning machine has a hardware or software problem. So what if we answer a software problem every once in a while, we all have them. It's the old adage, "if they can't get it at home, they'll go elsewhere." Give 'um what they need and they'll be back.

i agree that software makes the machine malfunction, no problem there. I just hope we're not being snobbish/selective of blatant software/troubleshooting prob lems we remove.

I agree whole-heartedly. +
