Proposal : Term Dict and TM( Translate Memory) on Translating
FIXinology has TERMinology
New contributors (just like me) wanna translate or write guides, but sometimes their words are confused, they use word for word translation, or use the term’s translations which was not widely accepted. That doesn’t work well! Take English-Chinese as examples
- Motherboard/Logic Board
主板 ✔️ The mostly used translation among pros and normal users, that is the word Chinese used to describe the PCB stuff which have lot of sockets, Electric components on , and waiting for CPUs MEMs to install on
逻辑板✖️ word for word translation :逻辑-logic 板-board, it a correct word, but seldom used anywhere
母板 ✖️ a completely wrong translation: Mother-母,board-板
- iPhone 8 battery replacement
iPhone 8 电池更换 ✔️ A nice translation to describe the procedure tasking old battery out and put a new on .
iPhone 电池替换 ✖️ Definitely a Engnese, although 替换、更换 both is a meaning in dictionary of replacement, maybe in some occasions we use this one, but on fixing phones , must use 更换
- To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order.
That’s the most common ending words almost in every guide, but I can find no less than 5 different Chinese translation of this and everyone seems makes sense , but there’s only one is the best. Or even you can find 3 different ways to speak it in English!
Etc etc and etc
So I think a term dictionary and TM( translation memory is important , these kind of term and sentences may need a official approved term list ,translation or Translation Memory(TM) :
Name of the device parts
Name of the tools
Universal notice words ( battery dangerous, reassemble)
Universal step description
Format of title
Etc
words in term dict or TM should be highlighted on translating editing page, hover on it to see TMs and terms, click to use.
Is this a worthwhile discussion?
