Hi Charlie,

We do not sell self-encrypting SSDs. If you purchase an SSD from iFixit, you’ll need to activate encryption (FileVault) on your Mac. You can find this option in System Preferences or Setup Assistant.

Hope this helps! Happy fixing.

The SED trend has come to a close as far as I know. They still exist for industries like healthcare who have to deal with HIPAA/HITECH, but that’s about the only industry left who cares about them. Unless it’s advertised as an SED, don’t worry about it no matter who sells it.

When my SED had performance problems, I canned it and went to a normal hard drive. I don’t notice a difference outside of the fact I will never have to worry about the encryption on the drive failing costing me everything.
