Quality question about product

Hey all! So I’ve done some search on this but didn’t find the exact answer. I assume the iPhone 7 Plus screen isn’t original and instead is an aftermarket product. How good of a quality is it compared to original? I bought the part to replace my wife’s cracked screen - she’s not a tech like I am so I doubt she would notice and small differences. Just wanted to hear peoples honest opinions on this. I’m curious if there’s a way to purchase parts that are guaranteed to be Apple ones.

thanks!

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

There’s no way to purchase “guaranteed-Apple” parts unless you go to the Apple Store (or AASP) and have them replace it. Anything else you buy is either:

  • A pulled part (original but used)
  • Pulled from a bad batch or gray market (end quality may vary)
  • Premium/OEM grade (which means it is most likely an original/used LCD and a mix and match of original/aftermarket small parts such as flexes, backlight, glass, frame etc.). Reputable vendors/refurbishers will usually detail what exactly is high grade in the product description. eBay/Amazon vendors tend to make it up as they go along.
  • A true aftermarket screen where all of the constituent components are aftermarket (these can be quite good)
  • A bottom of the barrel, piece of junk screen that uses the absolute worst quality components and build process (sadly, there are a lot of these floating around)

The important thing here is quality control. Good vendors/suppliers test the stuff they receive from China vigourously. While some duds will make it through, the companies that invest in a thorough QC process also stand behind their products with a generous warranty (think 6 months to Lifetime). While Premium/OEM screens are generally the best available (excluding used/original screens), there are good quality aftermarket screens also. In general, let price be your guide. Stuff that is bottom-dollar cheap is almost certainly bottom-of-the-barrel quality.

So if you want a great screen, encourage the vendors who do real QC and offer a generous warranty. This applies to both Premium/OEM screens and true high-quality Aftermarket screens. These are the vendors that are pulling everybody else up the quality ladder and making the replacement parts supply chain better. This way, you can have both great screens and more affordable options for those with less cash to burn or older devices that can’t justify expensive repairs.

Great info! Appreciate the response! With all that being said, what category would you put the screens ifixit sells? Prior to posting the original post - I did read what sounded like horror stories on the quality of the screen and the after problems they had. Not only that but I’ve heard people have problems reaching CS for a return or refund.

I ended up placing an order on the screen and kit, when it arrives is there anything in particular I should look for on the part that shows quality/origin?

Thanks!
