Debating which "Class" and "Generation" is worth buying

Hey fellow iFixers,

I wanted to ask you all a quick question that you can answer any way. I’m trying to figure out which generation of iPod and which type to buy, after my old 5th gen Nano literally blew up and split in half. I used to own a iPod Classic 5, but that got stolen, and I also had a 7th gen Nano, that had a shattered screen and LCD.

I want to buy the 7th gen again, for Bluetooth 4.0, as well as a ‘modern’ interface, but the other two have more features. The Classic is easier to repair and has a lot more available repair parts, whereas the 5th gen Nano had a video camera, and was pretty slim.

I’m lost. I need help. What’s your recommendation: 7th Gen nano, 5th Gen nano, or a 5th Gen Classic?

Cheers,

Jessica

UPDATE: 5th Gen it is! Better audio, more repairable, and much much more easier to upgrade! Plus, more feetures.

Thanks for helping me, folks!

5th gen Classic. It has a way better audio IC then the rest combined. Besides a way, way, way better audio and visual output it’s easier to fix, parts are still readily available and it can get updated to higher capacity. It’s got a real headphone jack so no problems connecting it to Bluetooth speakers via adapter. If that is not cool enough go all out and get a 30pin bluetooth transmitter and use your AirPods with it.

I wouldn’t touch another Nano with a 10 foot pole. Tiny, cute, and totally static. Can’t do anything with it and IMHO sound is mediocre.

Forgot about the Wolfson DAC. I haven't used an iPod classic in so long, I forgot that it had one of the best audio chips known. I'll look into it, @oldturkey03, thanks!

If you are looking at price alone, do this. Check anywhere online and pick the highest priced used Nano. Then go and find the highest priced 5th gen. Way higher. Why? Because those still rock it. It's like comparing a Mcintosh MC275 to a JBL Charge :-)

I still use a 3rd gen Classic and it Kicks Butt. Load some Okean Elzy, Jamala or Rammstein on it and listen to it then compare that to any Gen after that. No contest.....:-)

But what about the hard drive? Surely that's clicking and screeching by now...

Replace it with a SD/CF card or even 128 GB mSATA SSD. Costly? A bit but you get what you pay for. It'll be unique it'll be truly yours and one of a kind. It' ll be good to go for another couple of decades. Nice thing is you can still get the HDD until you are ready to upgrade and in the meantime you can still LISTEN to music.

BTW my 3rd gen, still on the original HDD :-)
