Uh oh. Now what are all the mac fanboys gonna say now? “Macs dont get viruses!” Haha lol. Like a chromebook, they are far less targeted than windows pc’s due to the high % of market share they have. I wonder if Apple will put out another commercial sayinf they dont get viruses?

Malware is not technically a virus! What Is the Difference Between Malware and a Virus? But to be sure its still not good!
The root issue here is when ever you do a massive re-write of an OS you can forget to close a break-in point or add a few in the process.
So simply put: Big Sur is not as secure as the older code base of Mojave! Catania is a transition release and could be weaker.
@danj here here! Although, I'm actually surprised that Bug Sur is such a rewrite since they already have the iPadOS and it should only need a slight rewrite of the DE (Desktop Environment) and the compatilbility layer (Rosetta 2).
@dunc - Its a bit more as the code endian between CISC and RISC gets in the way. This is a long carry over from the start. While ARM worked on building a inflight conversion in their chips it still adds more compute into the process needlessly. I'm sure Apple altered it to gain performance! most significant bit or byte

Is this the end for not needing AV on Macs? I've never run it because it's not good for much, but I keep MBAM installed.

MalwareBites is what you need for malware. AntiVirus apps are still important on Mac's too!
@danj I've run Macs naked besides MBAM for years. I haven't had an issue.

Think it this way... Which gun is more likely to blow your head off a gun with 20 chambers with one bullet or one with 6 chambers with one bullet? Clearly your chance of hitting the bullet is higher with the fewer chambered gun. So don't play Russian Roulette its not worth it!
Thats the difference between a Mac and a PC! Only because Apple has done quite a lot to prevent it. Signing and macOS Gatekeeper as well as Sandboxing within Safari. Most other web browsers don't offer that!
Even still I've seen quite a few infected systems. A lot from people using pirated software which was infected with spyware or a virus.
@nick Macs can still be infected.... I've seen software masked as "mac tuners" and such that people run that is clearly anyware other than helpware. I've had users ask me why their mac runs so slow and what to buy, and all I do is run my macOS from an external drive and show how fast their machine is and they then scratch their heads bumfuzzled.
All Xnix systems are inherently secure by their starting nature but that doesn't mean there are no gaps in the armour. Even linux systems can get malware/virus/etc. Windows takes security like a bullet proof vest and a helmet, but osx and linux take it like a full suit of body armour. Do not be fooled into thinking there are no weak points, even if they are fewer and far between.
Honestly, I run my windows machine with only windows defender. If I am downloading something sketchy, I install malwarebytes, then scan it, then uninstall it, as it boggs down my poor 5400rpm hard drive :( (ik, i need an ssd)
