Ifixit pdf document viewing problem

Hi @jarstelfox @annikamarthaler,

I uploaded a .pdf today in this answer to a question and have problems when going to view it using the ifixit .pdf viewer.

It opens but there is not much showing on the pages that do have anything on them

I have no problems opening it and viewing it from the copy on my PC or when I download it from Ifixit using the download link in the History page of the document itself.

ps. Would it be also possible to incorporate a feature in the ifixit .pdf viewer, that allows you to nominate a page to go directly to in a .pdf document as is found in other .pdf viewers?

The ifixit viewer tells you which page you’re on in the document but you can’t specify which one you want to go there directly, you have to scroll down through the pages to get to it.

Makes it easier if the document has a contents page at the beginning with the page number of the section that you’re interested in looking at. You can go straight there.

Cheers.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Strange. I'm seeing the same thing when I view the PDF from the post.

What browser are you using, @jayeff?

@ambertaus

I am using a Win10 PC and it occurs on Win 10 Edge, Firefox and Chrome browsers. Also tried on another Win 10 PC and the same thing. Document opens and p.1 has image but no text, then the next page with images etc is p.10 the ones in between are blank as are the others after this.

I get an indication that the blank pages are trying to load but this never happens so maybe the data coming back from Ifixit is corrupted

Though I can download the uploaded .pdf file from Ifixit and it opens in all 3 browsers with complete images and text on every page, so I presume that the file is OK and that it was uploaded OK as it seems that it is stored in Ifixit OK as the downloaded file opens completely - no problems on any page in the document

It must be related to the file or where it is stored/accessed somehow because I can view this .pdf file which I uploaded in this answer without a problem.

I have already uploaded the "faulty file" twice to Ifixit but as stated I can't fault it when opening from the .pdf file on my PC or when I download it from Ifixit and open on my PC - it only occurs when clicking on the link where I posted it in the answer or the View option on the document page I linked above. Very strange.

maybe you could download it from ifixit and save it to your computer and then view it there. If it is OK upload from your computer to a new answer? and after posting, view it on ifixit with your computer to see if it views OK or not.

Only trying to isolate whether it was the way I uploaded it (although I've had no problems before (or since), the file itself somehow or perhaps where it is stored in Ifixit even though for me it downloads OK from there etc.

Hi @jayeff,

Thank you so much for all of the details, that helps us a lot when we're looking into solving a problem :)

I brought this up to some of our developers and they looked at it a bit and think it might have to do with the version of our pdf viewer but that is a little easier said than done to update as far as I'm told.

I also haven't seen a specific reason as to why this happens because it doesn't seem to apply to all pdfs just some. Luckily, by downloading the pdf it appears just fine as far as I can tell. We have a tracking issue for this problem and will look at seeing if we can find the root of the issue and solve it.

Thank you.

Would it be helpful if I link anymore that I come across so that hopefully some common pattern may emerge as to why it occurs with some .pdf and not others or do you have enough info to go on already?

Cheers

@jayeff

Thank you for offering, I think that if you happen to find any feel free to link them but otherwise no worries I think we just need to figure out how to update our pdf viewer.

Thank you for your continued dedication to improving this site for our community!
