Hi Maria,
Thanks for sending us your feedback! This is, indeed, the proper place to share these ideas. I have some more questions about your request to make sure I’m understanding you correctly.
In general, our site is more focused around the content and the larger Answers/Guide community rather than peoples profiles. As a result of that, you aren’t able to search for a user by their name or email address to find their profile. The only way someone would show up on those searches is if their name/email address/user tag (@amber in my case) if it’s in the content hosted by the site–not their user profile. Other users can see your profile if they click on your name in a post/comment you’ve written on Answers, a comment left on a guide or blog post, or from a guide you’ve written.
1. Where we can opt out of having our profile be found on search results.
Do you mean search results within our site? Right now, if you were to type your unique user ID tag (@) in the search bar from the home page of iFixit, it shows one post you’ve been tagged in. If you like, I can remove that tag from the reply so your @tag doesn’t show up in the search results.
2. where we can toggle the privacy of our profile to be only visible to friends/people we follow etc.
Our site doesn't have a system that people can follow each other in the same way some other online communities would.
Please let me know if I can answer any more questions or if you have any other suggestions I can make to our team to improve you experience on our site!
