I'd like to see guides for upgrading software

First, I have to say I love this site!! It’s started me down the road to repairing old Power PC Macs for my personal use.

My question concerns Android devices, specifically tablets. I have a 2013 Samsung Galaxy Note. There’s very little I can do to physically upgrade without serious soldering skills. But what about OS? It has Jelly Bean 4.4, which is virtually obsolete. Could we get guides that describe how to upgrade to newer software?

Hi David

But the software depends on the brand, in this case Samsung. Ifixit can't do anything about that.

The only way I know of to update is to do it unofficially with custom ROMs. In some cases (it depends on the device) you can find a more updated version that they have carried from another more modern device.

XDAdevelopers could be a start, if you are looking for more information about this.

Good luck!

Thanks for the love!

I agree with @oscarsp, you're in a tricky situation.

We focus on tangible repairs to extend the life of your devices–to enter the world of software/OS updates opens a pretty massive door to stuff that is typically out of scope for what our goal is.

I hope these answers point you in the right direction!

@amber I've done software before but only with hardware ties that make sense. It's a fine line between opening the door to abuse vs helping.
