A tacit white flag from Apple on the Right to Repair!

Well this just came in on the Apple New feed! Apple announces Self Service Repair

The pendulum is starting to move in the correct direction but it will take some time and it looks like Apple is staying focused at the assembly space for now with the current crop of iPhones, hinting on also offering M series system repairs as well.

But is this enough? Apples push to larger sub assembly modules also costs more than the discreet component. Is the rebate on the parts return still too costly for such a simple fix type of issue?

Replacing the full shoe instead of just getting a new lace it needs still is an issue here!

I love your shoe analogy. I think in this case, replacing one shoe has a smaller impact than buying a new pair.

This was definitely amazing news to wake up to. We even wrote an article about it! If nothing else, I just hope that this move will encourage future Apple products will be designed with repair in mind.

@amber - True! But the point was a broken lace which would be cheaper still! And what about lost/damaged screws or other smaller element.

For small shops this could also affect them if they can't get the parts to service their clients. So in order to offer quick turnaround I need to buy a system to then get the replacement shipped so I have it on the shelf? That will be expensive!

Also don't lose sight here how this will effect you as well! If Apple pushes with a competitive price on battery replacements that could hit your bottomline.

Don't mistake this is a win! I just had hoped for a better answer.

It just took the threat of legislation. I didn't see this coming, at all.

@danj I'm going to argue to a point subassemblies make sense for something like this tbh. Most people aren't skilled enough to do a chip swap, so I can see their side. However I do agree we should be able to get such parts if you're able to do it but for most people it's better to swap an assembly. I've done it before too even when I know how due to cost differential otherwise.

Here's the worry I have just like Louis! Apple makes parts and manuals available to all

@danj Same. Wait and see if we won.

I'll have to read more carefully, I can't find where the catch is. But it is a trap ...

Thanks Dan for the information

You tell me! Apple's new "Self Service Repair" is a TRAP, not a victory for Right to Repair

It's all in how Apple delivers this and how complete. Its a bone when we want steak!

Batteries, camera units & displays I'll give them this is a win!

Anything else it's a question as it gets messy! To add to it many people will still want someone with deeper skills to fix their device. So as someone who has the talent to fix the device I will need for the customer to walk in my door before I can order the needed part? Or do I need to get the iPhone or Mac up front to then steal the part from to then order by snail-mail to replace it so I can offer a few hour turn around as I would then have the part from my sacrificial system? That gets expensive!

The Apple independent program was a bomb as it limited you on what you could fix and use for tools and information. I see this is just another spin of that same program not really helping their customers.

All they are doing is handing a part to someone without the skills to put it in making more of a mess (as the skilled folks can't get the needed support up front).

I hope I'm wrong!

For once, I hope you are wrong too.

The problem is that Apple will use this as an excuse to say that it is in favor of the repair. This will form a smoke screen so you don't have to take any more steps.

Will the machine / software necessary to match the components such as display or battery come included with each display / battery? Big problem...

I suppose standing up is important to take the first step.
