So I noticed something you did yesterday and I think that I have seen it done some time back as well, but I have never really understood why it was done that way. @oldturkey03

I'm wondering if there is a reason for first accepting incorrect moderation as "Remove as Spam/Offensive" and then afterwards reopening the same answer.

I feel like it's a bit weird to first vote for it to be removed and then directly afterwards reopen the answer again. Have I missed something and if so, why is it done that way? Maybe it's just showing it that way on the moderation page, but you actually don't do it like that?

@eke0909 that is the only way I can remove the votes. So let's say you vote to have an answer removed as Spam/Offensive and 4 people determined that it is not, there is no way to move that answer out of moderation. Now if I remove it because of being duplicate or being SPAM etc. and then "resurrect" the question, the inappropriate moderation will be null and void and all votes will have disappeared. There is no change in rep points. It's the way I reset the somewhat questionable moderations. You know, the ones that drive us crazy and make us wonder why they got voted on.

Let me know if this makes sense.

by

@oldturkey03 Okay, I think that I understand.

It feels really weird that it doesn't get removed after having negative votes for about 24h, or that moderators can use their superpower thing and vote against making it automatically get removed from the moderation page.

by

Yes superpowers would be what I want. One zap and votes gone ;-) I think the big people at iFixit know that I'd be zapping everybody so I don't think I'll get super powers issued soon ;-) Got to just continue to do what we are doing best. Taking care of questions and answers.

Hi,

Just noticed this user has suddenly become very active on the Moderation page.

It appears that they just want to remove some old and some very recent questions (no discernible pattern, to me anyway) that haven't been answered, even though some have comments requesting more info with no response from the OP.

So the point I suppose is do others agree with this and that these types of moderated questions i.e. Archive as not Answerable, should be eventually deleted by getting enough votes from the community or should the questions be allowed to remain and the Moderation request be denied by the moderators/admin in the event that someone, someday, may answer the questions for the benefit of others?

What will happen I think, if the questions are left to be removed by the community voting is that it will start creating pages and pages of partially voted for Moderation requests that will never be looked at and in amongst them there may be spam removal moderation requests that might have been missed etc. Who looks past p.1 or p.2 in Moderation? Not many I would venture.

Note: This user has always voted for most things in Moderation over a long period of time so I don't know whether they actually agree with the moderations or just like to vote ;-)

Cheers

I would say that it depends on the age of the question, plus how responsive the OP is.

If the question is 6 months old with limited information as an example, then it may be better to archive it as not answerable, let the OP know why we did it and it can be reopened with more information added. No need to on a 1-2 year archive as it's super rare for the OP to come back. A little bit of an extra step? Sure, but I'd rather say "we archived this due to no info, add more and it's going to reopen."

On the other hand, if it's 1-2 years old (depends on the device; for example a very high end workstation like a Precision I might favor 2 years, others 1 year) it's time to archive it.

by

@nick

No doubt over the years there are hundreds if not thousands of questions that have no answer or any responses from the OP so where to begin?

Good thing storage is getting cheaper but maybe not. If it wasn't perhaps the admins would do something about removing these types of questions as it is using up too much space unnecessarily. :-)

A lot of other forums are the same. People ask and don't bother to follow up, either to a response or because there is not an answer/response in a time frame that they want or even if there is and they don't like the answer for whatever reason. Maybe not an easy, cheap fix or beyond their skill set for example

I sometimes think that some people think that we're a call centre and should respond immediately when asked and if not they move on.

I've answered/commented on questions <10 minutes after they're posted and there is still no response from the OP.

In the interest of cleaning up duplicate actions resulting from multiple prerequisites, I made a significant number of changes to several of the guides under the Nintendo Switch heading. Arthur Shi @arthurshi has denied those changes, which I can respect but I would like the opportunity to discuss them with him.

Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any way to contact him directly to ask about his decision and possibly argue my case. Can you help put me in touch?

Thanks,
Jerry

Well now, you don't know what you're asking; there's a lot. I'll get to this in another post, but let me give you the general idea of what I was trying to do first.

It all started with my granddaughter and her Nintendo Switch. As is a common occurrence, they brought it to me and asked if I could fix it. Apparently she somehow (to this day I still don't know how) broke off the left Joy Con controller rail, ripping the sensor cable in half in the process.

So, of course the first thing I do is head to ifixit to find out what I was getting into. The good news was that there was a guide all ready to go showing me how to replace the Joy Con rail, and the parts are readily available.

However, looking more closely at the detached rail, I see that a couple of the screws are still in place, with the chunks of metal they screw into on the rail, not back on the Switch itself. Uh oh, this could be bad...

And yes, indeed it was. The mount points were torn off the midframe, meaning the only way to fix it is to replace it.

by

So I decided if I was going to go to all the trouble, it would make sense for me to take pictures and document the process as I went. In other words, I figured it was time to write my first guide.

Now, if you've ever replaced the back case on an iPhone 5C, you know exactly where this is going. *Every other part* in the entire Switch is mounted on the midframe, so replacing it involves a complete teardown. In the process of writing the guide, I used most of the other guides already in existence as prerequisites, which was a wonderful help in getting to the end of the process. In addition, there were a couple other parts that had to come out that didn't have guides, so I started out making those guides first since I was going to use them anyway as prerequisites for my midframe guide.

by

I finally completed the guide, and I judged it a success as it covered every step needed and, indeed, it didn't take long before I got a notification that someone else had successfully used it!

However, there was one aspect about it I wasn't happy with. That was the situation where one of the early prerequisites is to remove the motherboard. Of course, the motherboard guide involves unplugging everything that's connected to the motherboard, which is fine. The problem comes in when I later add another prerequisite like, say, the left Joy Con guide. The first step in the Joy Con guide says, "unplug the Joy Con cable from the motherboard", which step has already been done for the motherboard. Virtually every other part that has an existing guide has this same problem; it's duplicating the instructions that are already in place when the motherboard was removed.

by

I got sidetracked for a while by the need to replace a Chromebook keyboard (which I also did a guide for, since there wasn't one), but my guide bugged me so much that I finally felt like I had to do something about it.

After studying the issue for a while, I saw two solutions.

1) I could redo my guide, deleting most of the prerequisites and instead incorporating all the the instructions for the other guides inline in my guide and leaving out the duplicated disconnect instructions.

2) I could re-edit virtually all the other guides and split out the disconnect instructions into prerequisite-only guides that would then only be included once no matter how many guides including that prerequisite were used.

Option 1 felt, I dunno, kind of dirty, whereas it looked to me like option 2 would not only benefit my guides, but those of anyone else who ran into the same situation I was in.

@oldturkey03 @jayeff I like how this idea is working so far personally; seems to have worked out so far.

I think we should use this as the permanent solution to these kinds of issues, and extend it to questions about how to handle matters like guide rewrites as well. If I continue to make these, my "hands off" approach will remain; I feel like any severe interference will cause problems for everyone. Even if I wrote the thread, it's not my choice -- I'm just providing the medium to mention it.

It's between the person asking, doing the moderation, spotting the moderation and getting info about why or making the guide change and what the community thinks.

This one is from @guardian10. I fail to see how this is "off topic" in this case; badly written sure but that doesn't make it "off topic".

I said no to this because while it's poorly written, it's not spam. If someone can prove me wrong, I will change my vote or stay neutral.

It also looks like this one has been disputed twice:

I'd like to ask about rules or practices regarding using parts of existing guides to create new ones.

Specifically, I was given a laptop with a broken digitizer. As you might guess, my first stop was ifixit to see what I was getting into. While there is an existing guide to replacing the entire assembly, I didn't find anything specific to replacing just the touch screen.

So... I guess I'll be writing another guide. In doing my homework, I found that the existing guide could actually be used as a prerequisite, but I'm afraid I wasn't satisfied with the level of detail in it. So I started my own version of that guide that could be used to replace the entire assembly but is really intended to be a prereq for my digitizer guide. (Since the procedure for replacing an LCD is virtually identical to that of replacing the digitizer, I'll be doing a LCD only guide as well).

Anyway, my point here is that the existing guide does have some good pictures and the general procedure is correct, but lacks specific information for many of the steps. I'm getting close to completing my version of that guide and my question is, what's the general feeling for using photos and/or text from individual steps in creating another guide?

I kind of feel like it's sort of an "anything goes" kind of attitude here, given that a) the content is covered by the creative commons licensing, and b) the reuse of existing guides as prerequisites seems to be encouraged.

So in the interest of not giving unintended offense to anyone, what's the general opinion on reusing content from another guide? Or should I take the steps I've enhanced or modified and use them to fix (well, from my point of view) the existing guide? I can certainly understand not wanting to keep multiple guides covering the same repair, but I would hesitate to just jump in and make significant changes to someone else's guide.

Here's the existing guide I used as the basis for mine: ASUS VivoBook S400C Touch Screen Replacement

And here's my version of that guide (as far as it goes - I still have a few steps left to finish): ASUS VivoBook S400C LCD / Touch Screen Assembly Replacement

What do you guys think?

EDIT: Re-reading my last sentence, I don't want to imply that my question is directed only to the male gender; to me the word "guys" implies anyone, male or female.

I would not edit the old guide, unless they are REALLY MINOR. This is admittedly a nitpick, but you will never gain original author acknowledgement (even if you substantially improve it). Make the new guide. I would rather see someone like you thoroughly cover the procedure, as it may eventually displace the original, or supplements it (yours covers glass only, original swaps both).

Do you want to work to supersede the procedure for someone else with just editor credit, or author credit? Be realistic and leave the community aspect at the door... You fixed their failings; you want author credits, not shared. I realize this "hot take" is probably controversial based on the idea we can all edit guides, but also if I got a copy of the same machine, had to figure the procedure out, make the guide and put it up for others I wouldn't accept anything less. It is MUCH HARDER to claim it later if you change your mind vs. immediately getting it done.

No, the author with the "bad" procedure should not get credit for a procedure I came up with on the fly needing a drive for a 4GB E... I bought the $40 in hard drives (blew the security sector up on the first, but it worked. That made it useless as intended :/), I want the credit.

Take this guide for example, which I wrote: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/(Fat)+Xbox+... -- it is a similar procedure to the original, but I changed a few steps in a few small ways that SUBSTANITALLY improved the usability. This is the original (I also "credited" it in the intro): https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Xbox+360+HD...

As far as images go, it's okay to borrow the ones you like but I feel like even though the licensing allows for it (https://www.ifixit.com/Info/Licensing), it's "dirty". If you have a copy of the laptop, take a set of pictures you made and are proud of. If it covers a procedure you cannot effectively document but someone else has then only taking what you need (not all of them!) is fine. BUT everything else should be your own.

by

@dadibrokeit sounds reasonable to me. I would be okay with using the images as well for as long as credit is given to the original poster or at least where they came from. We can never have to many good guides.

by

@oldturkey03 I'm not against it either but I feel like it's dirty.

by

@nick nothing dirty about using other people groundwork and building on it for as long as we give the credit to those that came before us. This is what progress is base on. It's corroboration

by

@oldturkey03 The reason I wrote a new guide when I opened a "fat" 360 drive is just how much I changed, and finding the right bits to do it. But also credited the original, because technically mine was an improvement based on the concept of the original.

Yes, I used a 20GB HD but I did it to get the Xbox BC files you need these for. In my case, storage was not as important as getting those files, so I shown how to strip one down for the bare drive, then moving it to the newer Xbox.

@jayeff we need more clarification for some people as to what constitutes a duplicate or even spam etc. Moderation can get pretty congested with some rather interesting votes. We'll have to keep a closer eye on it. Good thing we got super powers :-)

by

@oldturkey03 Yeah there's a difference between asking if you can try "glass only" vs assembly swapping. I've tried on bad displays and I can't pull it off on these newer phones like I did with the Note 2 (before the 3G shutdown stopped them from being activated).

by

@nick read the question about the swapping of the assembly. The only commonality (besides the device) is the display. Process, subject and background are not related.

by

@nick I voided the prior votes on it since it is not a duplicate.

@guardian10 , yes, unfortunately, this tends to happen. We are working diligently to help train the bot make better decisions. The best way to do this is to have fixers report to us when something is erroneously marked as spam. So, while frustrating, it also helps the bot get better at discerning between ham and spam.

We appreciate your effort though, so keep it up :)

by

Kris was quite kind and explained it was a bot. But reading in here I've questions. Is mention of a free tool I use for diagnosing (and linking to it) spam? Should I not "grammar police" so as to not hurt feelings? That'sthe atmosphere I'm feeling,. I am fine with that, I don't want to discourage or offend anyone. Oh, next comment reminded me of another uncertainty: advising use of jail breaking software would be spam?. I wasn't sure whether to report as such or if it was a genuine attempt to help.

by

@uchetil, the gist for spam is that we need to make sure we're not linking people to places that aren't selling random things and are, 100%, not going to contain any virus's or malware.

As far as "grammar police", could you give me an example? If you're talking about editing a guide or a wiki for clarity, that's totally okay! We even have an entire page of guides that need someone to go in and fix grammar/confusing wording. The general rule is that if it's not messing with clarity, I'd not mention anything. Folks of all linguistic abilities should be supported encouraged to fix their devices. We're here to prevent e-waste and save some coin. ^_^

by

Jailbreaking software isn't necessary spam if it follows the rules of our guidelines, but our site is focused on repair—so it would need to be used in a way that makes a device last longer. I ask myself: does it turn this old device from a paperweight to a useful tool? Always feel free to post on Meta if you're not sure what to do!

Hi @oscarsp, @areeve, and @nick. I've been thinking about this tread a bit and wanted to jump back and address it.

Some things that look like spam sometimes aren't and this is, IMO, one of those cases (up for discussion! ^_^) In this thread, people are discussing WhatsApp. In many countries, people use that service rather than mobile service. So if their device isn't working with the app, they'll get a new device. In this case, I'd say that 'some' of the suggestions are valid as the software update does extend the life of the hardware.

I thought it was not safe to recommend unofficial apps from unofficial sites.

Thanks

by

@oscarsp "isn't spam as he came back and left his comment without the link" I think if we can validate that the link is appropriate and could be considered helpful, it should be ok. Watch the user and see if there are more comments/answers with the same link. That makes it a bit more suspicious.

by

@nick @oscarsp You both have super valid points. It's a super fuzzy line we're treading on here. It's something we discuss fairly often among staff at iFixit. I'll bring this thread up the next time we go over it (which, coincidently, should be happening soon.)

by

@amber Some manufacturers are infamous for needing it done, like Motorola. One major update and a few years of updates max. It's easy, but also easy to get wrong and hard brick the phone leading to the same fate.

If it's supported with an official procedure (Moto and Nokia, mainly) I'm cool with mentioning it. Phones which require exploits (U1 Samsung/Amazon Prime Moto) are in the fuzz zone.

Whew, well that was a lot more work than I had planned on! Figured I'd replace a broken laptop digitizer and be a good guy and write a guide for it to boot. What I didn't count on was finding that three of the four PEM nuts holding the hinges in the lower case were all busted off. Which means replacing the keyboard / palm rest assembly. Which everything else in the entire laptop is mounted on!

Anyway, now that I've finished a sh*t-ton of guides for that particular laptop, I'd like to ask for some help finishing everything up.

@oldturkey03 and @arthurshi, we talked a while ago about getting prerequisite guides flagged as Prerequisite Only so they can be published and not show up in the regular guide list. As we found, us regular users apparently don't have that as an option we can set in the flags, so I'm asking if you guys would be kind enough to set that flag on a few guides for me. Here's the list.

Also, I would really like to see the old ASUS VivoBook S400C Touch Screen + LCD Replacement guide removed, archived, or otherwise made unavailable. It's wrong, incomplete, and causes damage. It scares me to even have it around when following it will cause iFixit users to break their machines. And I know this from experience following it.

Good judgment comes from experience.
Experience comes from bad judgement.

HP Pavilion 15-p Hard Drive Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide

HP Pavilion 15-p Hard Drive Replacement History - iFixit

Steve Keate - iFixit

I denied this edit for my own guide as it was nothing more than a complaint, Steve Keate. WHAT PART DID I GET WRONG? You did not give me any information to improve upon besides wasting my time with a bad edit. I adjusted the difficulty to reflect, because I looked it over and didn't find any "vague instructions" -- rather, user error.

Due to your edit and lack of information on what I got wrong, I'm not going to prioritize fixing any errors, if there are even any as I will not legitimize change via a rude comment and inappropriate edit. I know that laptop absolutely sucks to open when I worked on the guides, so I was extra careful to find a way to open it so it's mostly first-time fixer proof. MY METHOD HAS CLEARLY WORKED FOR OTHERS. Since I made sure to vet the procedure better then I usually do, I do not intend to change it unless you can conceivably show me I made the error, and not you. The way you came to me about it is also not encouraging me to figure out what I need to change for a one-off error for you anytime soon. If there were any errors, I'd have known or I patched it years ago before for others who gave me examples of past errors. The favorite to completion ratio isn't lying; my way works.

THERE IS A REASON I CHOSE TO TAKE PERMANENT OWNERSHIP WHEN MY DAD (the ex-owner) WASN'T SURE ABOUT WHAT TO DO WITH IT. I NEVER do that when it has ~3 years of time left before it becomes a Linux PC due to the lack of TPM/11 compatible CPU, so take my decision to keep the laptop as a very strong clue.

As you can tell, my procedure happened to be very similar to this one: HP Pavilion 15-p046nr Hard-Drive Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide and HP Pavilion 15-p046nr Hard-Drive Replacement - iFixit Repair Guide. My method is largely recognized as being the way into these laptops.

It looks like the guide worked for others, so it's ok. Maybe the OP (of the comment) just got stuck and is just frustrated. Let's either clarify this or just put it on ignore. Let people express their frustration and let it go for a few days, after that I would suggest you try to clarify. Right now, deep breath and walk away from it to cool off.

by

@oldturkey03 I mean, it's not 100% impossible I didn't goof up the procedure slightly for beginners but I did look at it and I don't see any glaring errors. So yeah, it's very unlikely to be wrong.

I guess what frustrated me is the lack of real data to correct things. I'm aware my procedure is not the best but as you see, this laptop isn't a 10 minute in and out either and the HP service manual is mediocre at best about how to do it.

Just based on how much work this thing is to open, you can see why I chose to take ownership of it and erase it just based on the pain factor of the hard drive? I have no idea what to do with it... Maybe when I get bored of it I'll see if it's even worth another reuse with a 3rd owner

by

@oldturkey03 I found a few old inconsistencies in the intro. While I'll evaluate the palmrest removal steps later when I'm past the "no, you wasted my time" refusal, I'll look at the procedure more closely.

Not ruling out author error, but I'm leery about whose fault it really was. The only POSSIBLE source I seen was in how I worded the prying process. The rest is fine.

@nick don't look for faults and errors. Things happen and people just get frustrated sometimes. Just review it and see what you find that you think you could improve on

by

@oldturkey03 Oh I made a few changes. I clarified the difficulty by making it "difficult" again (I made the change based on a suggestion) but other then the guitar pick steps could potentially stand a partial redo, I found nothing. I also made the consider professional service disclaimer more prominent but not in your face to discourage people, but also give fair warning.

I guess I was just not in the mood to properly address it yesterday based on the way the OP of the comment edited the guide and seen it as an attack.

@amber I think I fixed everything I wanted to on my profile. Do you see any glaring errors? Some of what I did was a bit sketchy sure, but it got me where I did.

No glaring errors!! My only suggestion is to turn your " -- " into an M-dash "—" but that's a tiny grammatical thing. (Shift+Option+- on a mac. Not sure how to on a Windows machine.)

I loved reading your story. I had now clue about your cat—can you share it's name? I've always been curious.

by

@amber Marie. Apparently she was one of the few who were spared from the deafness issues. Even then, it's not an issue since you just need to tap near the cat or blow on it to not startle it. Or if she was I never knew. Sometimes by the time you see the cat, they've already adjusted which makes it hard to know for sure.

They are....louder when they are deaf most of the time.

by

@nick Thanks for the introduction. I'll say "Hi" to Marie when I see her around the forum. <3

by

@amber I need to see how to do the larger -- on Windows. But I reduced it to one as a quick fix.

I used to hide that part about pushing my way through school to play Halo CE and relax, but I've seen more and more over time the ones who made it are also guilty of it.

by

Apparently Windows makes it complicated. "Hold down the Alt key and type 0151."

I was, also, not your model high school student. Let's just say it took some night school and teachers who thought I was cooler than my test scores who helped me through. I was too focused on getting home to play WoW. /shrug

@geirandersen this "https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/7338... got marked in moderation for a Merge as Duplicate but I cannot find a duplicate to merge it to....Usually we merge questions if there are multiple question by the same OP for the same error/device.

@oldturkey03 Yes, I flagged it because there were two identical questions, with only a tiny difference in the title. I linked both questions when I flagged it, but I can't find the other one now. Could be that the other one got deleted or something, but when I flagged it there was indeed two.

by

@geirandersen okay good. So no wonder I could not find it :) Thank you for taking care of that, appreciate that

I just flagged another two questions for merge, as they are duplicate. (It's in the moderation queue noe.)

This one: Question 1 is the same as this one: Question 2

They are both older questions, but the same user brought back both questions today

@geirandersen we should only merge question if they are by the same OP on the same device. If we merge questions that are similar but from different OP's, it can get very confusing and will turn Answers into a common forum. What we try to do here, is to give every OP their own individual answer. That way it is focused and specific. It eliminates all the "me too" comments you see on other forums.

by

@oldturkey03 I suspected that might be the case, which is why I posted it here on Meta as well

I saw you take care of it by splitting and archiving. Now I have a better grasp of how to possibly flag in such a case :)

by

@geirandersen Awesome. I love it when a good plan comes together and keeps Answer clean and simple to use while still providing a personal touch for all OP's. Thank you for pitching in. It is appreciated.

General question about moderation, and what action to take:

This question from 2012, just received a comment in Spanish where the user asks about a completely different motherboard and also not one English word in the question.

What is the appropriate mod action to take here?
- Switch to question?
- Remove as spam / offensive?

I've seen both done in the mod history, but couldn't find a "correct" answer?

First iFixit has quite a few translators who post duplicate language sites for the major languages. Even still some get posted in the English Answers site which don't get caught.

I make a translation using Google Translate and/or my limited language skills. Posting a comment will do.

I also spin off new questions which is unrelated to the current OP question or not related in any form.

@geirandersen - I've made the corrections to a new question.

by

@danj Thanks! I was about to request it to be changed to a question, then I took a look back in the mod history, and found conflicting results. I also used Google translate and found it to be a fair and valid question, as I'm very used to users posting in their native language on other fora.

Nice to know which is the preferred option :)

Me again :P

I tried to request the latest "answer" in this post to be switched to a comment on the answer provided by John Snook, but I can't seem to get it done. It's not appearing in the Mod queue?

@oldturkey03 , thank you :) By chance, is this also the same issue that @guardian10 brought up below?

This isn't a moderation decision question per say, more of a how would you moderate?

This question was "answered" by this user, 2 days ago.
Today the same user brought back the same question, only this time to leave a comment on the original question, with the same text as in the "answer" from two days ago. The user is fresh as a daisy, joined 06/27/22

@geirandersen since the users request for more information was more of a comment, I delete the question as of topic. Normally I opt for those to get moved from an answer to a comment. Some users have difficulty making the distinction between comments snd answers

Hey guys, I've been busy again, this time on the iPhone X device.

I think I have every single component of the bloody phone covered now, and I've taken your advice and my previous experiences to heart and compromised between having no duplication of effort between guides and keeping the number of prerequisite guides to a minimum.

I see that us ordinary mortals unfortunately still cannot set the Prerequisite Only flag on our guides, so I'd like to ask if one of you kind persons would do that for me. Here are the guides I would like to add the Prerequisite Only flag on.

That's it, thanks!

BTW, no real hurry on these; they work fine being marked as Private, but I'm trying to do things the usual and customary way.

Thanks for the heads up. As you've said these can wait a little while, I'll tag @krisrodriguez here and she'll get through them when she returns from her time off next week.

by

Appreciate it, @amber. Thanks for your help.

by

@dadibrokeit , appreciate the patience on this. I've gone ahead and added the prereq flag to each of the linked guides. Great work! Let me know if you have any other questions :)

by

@amber, @krisrodriguez, thank you for your help! I appreciate the kind words. The iPhone X should now have a very complete set of guides for anything possible that needs to be done to them.

I'm still puzzling out why it is I keep getting these repairs that require a complete teardown of the device to fix, lol.

by

@dadibrokeit , you're welcome :) As far as you tackling those harder repairs, I'd venture to guess it's because of your attention to detail. Thank you for putting together a comprehensive iPhone X guide list :)
