How should we clear bad questions out of the "Unresolved" tab?

It looks like we need a better way to remove bad questions from the "Unresolved" tab. Putting an answers of "Needs more data" and voting that up sets a bad precedent on the site. It correctly removes it but kinda goes against our general answering policy. We have said in the past that "needs more data" is a comment and doesn't really belong as an "answer."

What do you think of removing posts from the "Unresolved" tab if they're scored < 0 or < -1?

I'd personally prefer a tag like "Needs more data" or something that would remove them from the "Unresolved" tab.

Maybe a moderator ability that would hide it until the user edits it again?

What would be your ideal solution for removing bad questions from the "Unresolved" tag?

I can't get too worked up about an incomprehensible question getting an answer of" needs more data". That the question can't be answered without being coherent sends an OK message for me.

by

Yeah but according to iFixit policy it should be a comment not an Answer, it sets a bad example and precedent. Definitely not a perfect solution. Someone would also get undeserved rep for non-answers.

by

Comments won't clear the post. Are you just objecting about who gets points for the "answer"? ''If it clears the board, accomplishing the objective does it really matter?

by

Well rep is supposed to reflect on how good you are at helping others, you shouldn't have rep you don't deserve, it may show someone is much better than someone else, or something like that, which may not reflect on reality.

Something like your idea for a mod to hide it until edited, but maybe just a timeout, if it has been "orphaned" for say, 90 days, it gets hidden automatically. Maybe there can be a separate tab or category or status for orphaned, and maybe another status for hidden or something like that. But hidden would remove them from all tabs except a Hidden tab.

This is an important question that needs discussion.

LOL I like the orphaned term. We'd end up with three states "unresolved", "orphaned" and "dead"? What would be the difference between "orphaned" and "dead"?

by

dead? I don't know about that, I think hidden and orphaned are good terms, maybe after 60 days with no attention from the poster it's marked as orphaned, and then 30 more days and it's hidden automatically.

If there are cogent answers that have not been accepted by the O.P. and upvoting would clear "answered" unresolved items, leaving only actually unresolved questions. Wouldn't that be a good thing?

Chris I like your idea of a needs more data tag. Unresolved tags could be tagged NMD after 30 days of unresponsive behavior by the OP. It would be ideal if only the OP could access the posting to prevent add on questions and the like. Then after a period of 3 to 6 months or a year the ifixit staff could delete them or whatever they deem appropriate. A plan such as this would clear out a fair number of unresolved questions. Why doesn't the ifixit staff remove them now? If they could do in six months or a year why wait?

by

+ I have been looking for the "needs more data" link/tag since I got here.

I like the idea of only displaying questions with score >= -2. This keeps a single person from moving an unanswered question from the unresolved list, keeps the question in some of the other tabs in case the author returns, and gives a little more meaning to votes. Also, it's super easy to implement.
