The Bug Folder: Part 2 2022

Hello Meta!

Our bug catching folder was a great success! I was planning on making it a yearly catalogue of issues we find, but not a single bug got past you and your bug seeking skills. All that being said, we really appreciate you sharing bugs (big and small) so we can keep our site running smoothly.

For an inside peak on how we do things, as sometimes it may seem like nothing happens with these, this is what we do with your bugs:

# I write up your bug in a report for our QA and Developer teams.

  1. QA works their magic to replicate the bug. If we can't make it happen again, we can't figure out how it went wrong.
  2. Once we know exactly what's wrong, QA sends the bug report to our developers where it gets ranked against all the work the developers do (which is a lot). Bugs that are annoying but not preventing the site from working will rank lower than something that prevents users from doing stuff. They also go up against long term projects, improvements, and general maintenance.
  3. Sometimes, if a bug isn't such a big deal and we have a project coming up that will have the developers poking around in the same pile of code, we'll set it aside for when that time comes.

Remember, share as much detail as you have about the bug (the more we know, the faster we can fix it):

  • Where you saw it (URL's are great!)
  • What you were trying to do and what happened instead.
  • Screenshots if you’ve got ‘em!

This is a Dutch translation which was incorrectly filed as an English translation. @amber Any way to keep the Dutch translation but move it into the correct category?

This is a little tricky. Don't mess with it for now and we'll get it sorted out.

The original is in Mandarin and was translated into Dutch in the English interface. The user will need to copy/paste their translations into the Dutch interface (so they get their reputation for all of their hard work.)

I will pass this along to @sandrahiller and @claire17 and they'll help get in contact with the Dutch translator and move their stuff over. We generally give them a specific amount of time and if they don't do it by then our staff will move the translation.

Yes, we can take this along! It seems that the Dutch translator already took over the translations into the Dutch translation interface. We know him and will contact him to explain the situation.

Since about two weeks there is an issue with translations: although all steps are translated, the progress stops at about 90% and the guide does not disappear from the list of translations.

E.g. 139627 (in german), or 127115 (in english)...

@vauweh I wonder if that is related to the message that none of the devices have yet been categorized " Our admins will be around to organize this content soon" BTW, I love those coffee make repair guides. Most of those models are available "worldwide" so those guides are super important and informative.

I'm rather busy as a member of a local "repaircafe" and I do lots of repairs, especially those coffee makers - and I love to share my knowledge. Thank you for your translations, my active english could be better.

@vauweh according to my family, my german got a bit rusty as well. A lot has changed over the last 30years :-) I love the ongoing drive for the right to repair and all those efforts made by the repair community. We may be continents apart but all those efforts do not go unnoticed over here. Consumer protection and right-to-repair are decades ahead of where we are and that is in part because of people like you and your groups. Well done!

@vauweh Many thanks for forwarding these buggy translations! The problem you observe is affecting some new translated guides. Devs are working on the bug. We hope it can be resolved soon. You're welcome to forward other buggy translations in this thread!

Strange effects!

I'm finding a group of spaces are being padded at both the beginning and end of my comment replies.

Here's the question: MacBook Pro 13” 2019 not booting after screen damage

I've even tried cleaning the padding (editing it out) only to find it comes back sometimes.

Another old bug that I though may be worth revisiting as it still not working. i.e. both .pdf mentioned, the one in the question and the one in a comment at the bottom of the thread.

The uploaded .pdf opens in the viewer but there is no text etc. on most of the pages.

In the example linked above, in the original answer update, in the "schematic" pdf only p.1, 10, 16,have text and p.36-39 have partial text only and the rest don't have any at all.

When it is downloaded from the page linked above it works OK on my PC.

It only been on a couple so far but it is making me check after posting them in an answer, every .pdf that I upload, just to make sure that it works.

You can't view a .pdf in an answer preview as you get an error message. The answer has to be posted before the .pdf can be viewed.

There is no discernible pattern that I can make out as to why it happened with these two.

The one mentioned above and this one. This one opens with no text at all, but again if you download it from the page in ifixit it can be viewed OK on your PC so the loaded data must be OK

This is an odd bug that we're having a hard time replicating. It has to do with how we translate/show other languages. But thanks of reporting it!

Got a new one! For some reason clicking on a notification now spins off a new browser window so I need to copy the URL and then close it to then go to the original window to post the URL so I don't loose my tracking. Please lets go back so you stay within the active window and just alter the URL like before so we stay within the one window session (no second window or new tab state)

So these used to open in a new tab (in the same browser window) but then stopped and were only opening in the same tab. We just had this fixed to open in a new tab. Can you check that it's not a browser setting?

Just to be clear its only via the bell icon that I encounter the issue when you hit one of the listed new notifications. The full notification list works as it should.

I don't do tabs ;-} As I often just end up closing the window by mistake within macOS. I can see why people use tabs within tablets and phones.

Besides, tabs use more RAM! More so in Chrome

@krisrodriguez - Did you mean this bug Vs the Merging questions issue? I just noted the spawning of a new window is not happening here! So does that mean you fix this bug?

@danj , I initially meant the merger question issue, but if this is still an issue as well, we can definitely look into it. @amber is working her way through after being out with COVID. So I'm sure she'll be around shortly to take a look.

@amber @hellomacos just call me Doc Brown. The question is a conversion. It was left as a comment an a different question. @geirandersen had left a comment on it. Once it got converted to its own question the timestamp changed to the time of conversion but did not change on the comment. Little bit of pixie dust and poof :-)

mmm... Merging questions appears not to be working.

I tried to merge these two questions:

They don't appear to be linked as I had expected.

The answer I posted does show up in both, but shouldn't the question its self also duplicate?

@krisrodriguez - Hi, The answers are duping correctly, but the question its self is not marked as a duplicate. At one point we had a header within the question that had the note of this being a duplicate question with a link to the other. That way any differences in what was asked was also findable.

Hi @amber,

Not a bug perhaps, but just noticed the following when having to edit a question after moderating it from being a comment in another question not about refrigerators (the comment was in a thread about a Google phone??), to its own new question.

When selecting "edit" in the new question which had the wrong device linked (Google phone was the device shown), I selected a Whirlpool refrigerator. Before submitting the edit it showed that I had selected a Whirlpool fridge French door ice maker but when the edit was submitted it showed correctly as a Whirlpool refrigerator.

Very confusing for anyone who thought initially that they were selecting a Whirlpool refrigerator as their chosen device.

Perhaps I found a bug. I will try to give a detailed explanation.

Discovery

Usually, when I checked my account activity history, it looks like this :

A normal activity history entry is a score (optional), a datetime and a title to be able to identify what is the entry in the history.

But today I found an entry with no type so I cannot identify what are these entries :

So it seems there is a way to get anonymous activity entries in the iFixit activity history. I'm not sure how this happened exactly so I will try to give maximum details of what I'm sure and what I'm not sure.

What I'm sure

  • At least one of these two invalid entries is linked to this page : https://fr.ifixit.com/Tutoriel/Sony+Vaio...
  • One of these entries should indicate that a page related to the repair guide mentionned above has been translated

What I'm not sure

I think these two entries are empty because I translated a guide for a component of a device that has prerequisite guides that was not translated first, example :

The guide in the image is translated but some prerequisite guide is not translated yet and I'm sure this guide is linked to at least one of the invalid entries in the activity history.

Why I think it's a bug

As every entries contains a link with some text, an entry should not be empty.

Before that I never encountered empty activity entries in the history since I use the iFixit platform because before that entries were not created immediately but were delayed until every prerequisite guide of a guide where translated. (This is an assumption because I don't know exactly how iFixit platform works internally)

Edit

I now have the proof it's a bug.

I examined generated HTML code for some entries in the history and I can confirm the empty history entries are abnormal.

Explanations :

We can observe the generated link of the empty entry is / that is equivalent to the root of the iFixit website (including the subdomain used for i18n), so in my case href="/" is like a link to https://fr.ifixit.com subdomain without pointing any page.

As a proof, I included what a normal entry look like in the picture above where we can observe the href of the link is / something/... instead of just / .

This was a "feature" we added for performance reasons. The first time you loaded a page on iFixit our fancy font wasn't cached so we showed the page with your system's font instead, so you didn't have to wait.

We also found the shifting fonts annoying though, so we just got rid of the custom font since most system fonts are pretty great now.

So, this should be resolved now!

We appear to have lost the device chooser holding the place (really should be one level back). As an example: Here'a a question which needed the device changed

Ideally it should step back one level as example here so one doesn't need to step up through all of the levels.

Found lots and lots of random users with 100 rep from nowhere. I have only ever seen this on Meta.

223872 and 283062 are examples.

@guardian10 as a general answer (not having checked the users you are referring to) about the 100 reputation points in Meta check the Answer from the Boss :-) on here How does the reputation system for Meta work?

You can do numbers, but really links work the best. The content of your link can include the userid (those numbers) or a link to their profile. For example, Amber or 3812521 both go to the same URL, my profile.

The trick is using either the text editor or wiki syntax to embed the link.

Haven't been across bugs for a while so maybe this one has already been reported.

When moderating a follow up comment by an OP under a question by the OP to an update to the question to make it more noticable, it makes the date of the "update" the same as the date of the original question even if it was posted several days later.

As seen in this post that you moved from meta to answers, the original question was posted 2 days ago?, (which seems wrong - read on) but when I moderated the comment posted by the user on 09/30/2022 to an update to the question it showed the update as being done on 09/25/22 which it wasn't. (see "update date" and edit in History post)

I then edited the "update" date to correct it.

This is not the first time I've seen this happen so I thought I'd pass it on.

Hopefully this makes some sense to you.

Whenever I try to go to an unpublished guide from one of my team members, it throws error 403: access denied. I should be able to access them, as I am on the team. Not sure if this is a bug or not.

@guardian10 only if the team has been given permission by the author. If that has not been done you cannot access the guide even so it is a team member.

Iv noticed this since I have been on Meta but I’m not sure if it’s a bug or if it’s intentional

So on the main iFixit website you get a little blue notification symbol on your profile to indicate you have a notification

On the Meta website I don’t get this when I’m on my iPhone

I’m on the latest iOS using safari

Like I said Im unsure if this is a bug or if it’s intentional

@hellomacos I have noticed something similar.

On the Answers forum, I get a notification (blue) without refreshing, but on Meta I have to refresh the page for the notification to appear (orange).

I am on 2021 MBP 16" M1 Pro using Chrome, all with latest versions.

The color isn't so much a bug as it is leftover old settings. I've sent it around to see if I can get it changed to blue.

As far as seeing it on a mobile device, as far as I know, we don't display the notification icon on mobile because there's already so much going on. We can only fit so much. I'll find out why the dot shows on ifixit.com but not meta.

Hello iFixit team,

I found another bug:

  • When I tried to translate a protected page (seems to be protected by a minimum number of reputation points), I can only submit the translation once. If I try to submit again with some changes (e.g.: to correct a mistake) I got the error bellow:

Note: in the image below the platform restored back the old page title and I didn’t notice it before submitting the first time, so now I’m stuck because I cannot correct my mistake.

It’s not the first time I encounter this bug, it rarely happens (it’s the third time).

Here is what I tried to bypass the issue without success:

  • I tried to log-in/logout
  • I tried to reload the page
  • I tried in another (up-to-date) browser

Here is what I noticed to bypass the issue with success:

  • If an admin validates the changes, I can make one modification again.

Here one that really needs fixing! When you are on any base doc for a given device (offering the listing of the different guides) as example a Late 2011 15” MacBook Pro and you select the Parts & Tools menu you won’t get to it all you’ll get is a half shift down you need to press the menu option a second time to get to the listing of that section.

I’m sure on a large display this won’t be an issue but on an tablet or phone people will be confused. I encountered it on my iPad while I was traveling.

We've been having a bit of trouble reproducing this one on mobile devices.

If possible, could give me a little more info?

What iPad, iOS, and browser are you using?

And just to make extra sure I'm understanding your steps, would you mind confirming this is causing the issue for you?

1. Go to https://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pr... on your iPad

2. Expand the "Contents" dropdown on the page

3. Click on "Parts and Tools" in that expanded dropdown

Expected: Should append "#Section_Parts_and_Tools" to the url and jump to that section on the page.

Unexpected: The halfway scroll you described above.

I’m using an iPad Air 2 with iPadOS 15.7.1 and Apples iPad Safari

When I click on the left hand menu Parts and Tools I get a flicker on the screen but nothing happens, the second time the page refreshes then the thrid time it drops down to the section.

Something was changed from before.

Hello iFixit team,

I found a little bug, it's just an entry that links to a 404 page, but this page exists.

Here are the details :

When I go to my activity history, I see this entry :

This entry usually links to a page in history of modifications for a device page, but when I click on it in the French version of iFixit, I got a 404 page :

If I switch my language manually to English, the entry link to a valid page like this :

To me, this is an inconsistent behavior as the target page exist if I set my language to English but it's not processable when I set my language to French (not processable is different than not exist).

This inconsistency occured when I made modifications on an english page but I switched back my language to French after that, so the entry is related to the english version of iFixit but I'm on the French version when I click on it. So in theory, it can happened to any user that used more than one language on iFixit and made modifications on another languages than the one he used at the moment he click on the entry in the activity history.

To solve this here is some proposals :

  • Display the entry in the activity history without making it clickable (no link) when users cannot access this page (403 or 404).
  • Or, if language is not correct, change the language automatically to display the entry (but this can lead to misunderstanding of what happened to the user)
  • Or, display a 422 page instead of 404 than explain to the user, "the page is not accessible in your current language, please switch to language xxxxxx to view it". (probably the best solution)

This bug may not be easy to fix as this bug is related to the way internationalization works on the iFixit platform.

@amber - - Two bugs!

When you click on the comment reply choice which populates the @person, your insert is to the left of the @ symbol Vs to the right of the persons name by one space when in Answers or Meta.

Within here in Meta when I enter manually the @person we get the correct right of the name (which is bolded) if you apply a dash (-) the @person entry becomes a bullet! Which is not what I wanted in order to work around it I need to do what I’ve done above placing a space dash space second dash and one more space before my text

Maybe it would be cleaner a leading @person a space dash and one more space or just leave it with a single space and not alter the next entry so it’s not converted to a bullet entry.

On my iPad I can’t get bold or italics to work within a comment field using the single hyphen entering two or three leading and trailing the text I want to alter.

I would love to see the format ribbon added to the comment field as it would make the presentation of what’s posted cleaner.

Hi @danj, when looking into this we discovered the problem is that to make bold and italics you should use apostrophes rather than hyphens.

Ohhhh. It's a 'fancy' apostrophe problem. iOS is trying to be smart. >_< If you tap and hold the ‘ you can select the ' (difference is straight vs curvy.) Not ideal, but it should work in the mean time.

@amber Hehe, that’s just how the development and implementation process is! I think I can count on 1 or 2 fingers, the times I’ve had a new thing (in my development process it’s usually been related to SQL scripts) where it worked right away.

I’ve never had it as bad as a former colleague though; He was just going to run a quick update script on the production database at ten to four, because he was starting 4 weeks of vacation at four. He did a boo-boo and deleted 16000 client records from the database! 😳 That was an intense moment!

Here’s a weird one:

I happened to be in the Moderation section of Answers, and when looking at an accepted solution where the original question had pictures, I tapped the picture (I’m on an iPad 7th. gen, running latest version of iOS).

The “toolbar” with magnifying glasses should show on the image (at least that’s how it performs on my Macs), but they show up waaay! to the right… (See attached pictures.)

Here’s one more (not OS or device related).

I’ll start by confirming I know the ability to edit certain aspects of a question is only available >=5k rep. points.

I just was in the mod queue and I was the 3rd person to “accept” a switch to a question. I wondered if I could edit the title, +, since I was the last to click the check. I went ahead and edited, because I had the original question in another tab, and everything looked OK. Preview and submission all checked out, and when I was returned to Answers, the question showed (on the far right) edited by Geir Ove Andersen (see image). However, the question was not actually edited, even though it said it was 🤔

In the History of the question (see image) it shows no sign of the edit I did.

I reckon it’s either a bug that the list of questions shows that it was edited, or it show up in a moderator queue that you guys see?

Hi @erinm, Yep, that’s the one. I just “edited” the question again, and everything checked out once more, but the edit doesn’t happen.

This time the Answers queue list doesn’t show the question as edited though.

@erinm Here’s a very similar one, that just happened now. This question, I just moderated a switch to a question, then went in and edited the correct device, and a good title.

The device change was OK, and shows in the History of the question, but the Title remains as the “No Title…”

@geirandersen, we figured this out! Non-moderator users don't have the ability to edit titles, but for some reason we don't block you from trying. We're working on a fix to make it clearer earlier that you can't edit post titles.

Hi @amber

Just an observation regarding the latest ( I assume) software update to the Answers forum.

Having to click on the comments, especially under a question, to make them visible, whilst it may look neater doesn't help when answering a question with a comment for more information, as the OP may be unfamiliar with the way things work and will not see it.

I can understand that people don't want to trawl through "I have the same problem" type comments, but asking for more info to clarify the problem or suggest a troubleshooting procedure to further aid in diagnosing the problem to reach a fix shouldn't be moved to an answer so as to ensure that the OP sees it, because it's not the answer to the problem. I believe it should be left the way it was.

There's also a bug, neither @oldturkey03 nor I could edit this question to insert the title of the question. I didn't even get a preview of the question when I edited it

Both issues need to be fixed.

I only realized the comments where fully hidden Sunday and wanted to check it again to be sure.

Basically, the first five should stay visible, the the sixth and onward collapsed.

I also couldn’t edit a question so it was more readable, it was a giant text blob with no paragraph breaks.

Hi @danj and @jayeff, the latter (editing titles) is a bug that we're working on fixing.

The second is something that should only be collapsing if there is an accepted answer or a "most helpful answer". The idea behind it is based off of people "bouncing" off of a page if the answer is not visible rather quickly. So once a solution is found, the comments can be hidden (unless someone wants to open them up) as the draw for someone to remain on the page is the solution to the problem they're looking for.

Hi @amber - Can the text block space be enlarged a bit I really find it’s small size a chore to move about, more so when editing.

Also responding to notifications is now harder as you cant just touch the Avatar icon to see the list as we had before. Now I need to open the full notification list and I can’t mark duplicates as responded to. I need to open the question from the listing for each bolded entry and let it get to the question then I can exit the question. On an iPad Air2 this consumes a lot of time. If possible can we roll this back?

I do like the menu listing, still not very intuitive for the first timer

Again, we really need the tool pallet within the comments text area, we can forgo the images if that was the issue. It would be a lot easier to bold as well as indent text

I've brought up the size of the box and the editing options to our developers. Those sorts of changes will fall into line after they're ranked for importance along with site-maintenance things.

@amber Both width and depth. Cut, copy and paste is a real pain on an iPad with such a small window. What I find interesting is the iPhone version is better.

I know this is a bit of a Goldilocks predicament as the iPad is not a small display and yet not as big as a Mac. We need to do better!

Hi @amber

The embedded link edit feature that was added a little while back that when in the Edit mode for an Answer allowed you to edit the link and text by right click on the highlighted text and select either delete or edit is no longer available.

Nothing happens when you click on it to try and edit the entry. The only way to do this now is to delete it and start again

Oops, this does seem like a bug. Thanks @jayeff! I'll let the developers know.

In the mean time, when you're editing the post, you can edit it by clicking on the linked text and then clicking the add a link button. It's not intuitive but hopefully it'll save you some hassle until it's fixed.

Another "missing" moderated question to follow up.

Today I moderated this question to meta as I thought that it would get a more appropriate response here than in Answers.

However, when looking at the meta answers page at around the time it was migrated, it is nowhere to be seen, at least not in the English meta pages anyway.

Great catch @jayeff. I was just talking about this problem with our developers yesterday, so I can actually explain what's going on. Our site has a way of checking what language each submission is written in and Meta only posts English. One tricky thing is that when a post is moderated over to Meta it bypasses where we'd tell someone to please submit in English.

That being said, Admins have a cool new tool (thanks devs!) where we can manually tell iRobot to just slot it in on English meta. I'll do that for this one.

Moderated an answer (see 2nd deleted answer) by this user to a new question which I edited as well so both Arabic and English in the question, but it doesn't appear in the Answers Index at all.

Hi @sedorr, it looks like DarkReader is what's breaking the pages for you. After looking over it with our team, it looks like the problem is on that extensions side. Our recommendation is to disable it while you're on the site or to file an issue with DarkReader.

For some reason , for "What you need" the site loads the proper german translation but then switches to english after a second. The "What you need" is the only string this happens to. Also for some reason the the wikis aren't loading the pictures after they recieved a translation.

Another problem perhaps.

I noticed that as the question had been accepted 5 days ago, I would look in my Notifications list for the Accepted Answer notification, as it is much shorter than my subscribed list or my Activity list but you can't go back further than 2 days in Notifications whereas both the subscribed and activity lists go back a long way. Is this right?

@tay0_0, 1. I get your smart glasses when I search, just as I should. (I’m using latest Chrome on 2022 iPad Air M1 latest iPadOS).

2. The Wiki stub is not finished by the looks of it, and the image used either got corrupted when uploading or something happened. Only half the image is there. Try editing the stub and upload the picture again.

3. ??? The category you linked is showing just fine, no issues as far as I can see. It lists categories, guides and questions related to Pet Supply

Maybe a bug I don't know but have noticed before that when the iRobot moderates a question from Meta to Answers the device shown in the question in Answers is always the same - iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display (mid 2017)

Here's a question that I just moderated from meta to answers to show how it appears in Answers.

Wouldn't it be better to have no device type at all?

When hovering the cursor over anyone's reputation graph, the number from that time no longer shows. The only extensions I have are Honey and VidIQ.
