Playstation 4 optical drive replacement guide editing

I have a playstation 4 model CUH-1115A that doesn't read certain ps4 game discs. Evidence points to the disk drive wearing out. I have a repair guide, but the guide has conflicting information.

I quote "On 1xxx series models of the ps4, the optical drive and motherboard are paired, thus replacing only the optical drive will result in a non-functioning device."

On the other hand, the guide has information about taking the disk drive daughter board off of the disk drive and doing a swap.

I did this exact same repair on ps3 without a problem.

I'm under the impression that a ps4 disk drive can be switched as long as the same daughter board is used because the daughter board is paired with the motherboard, but the quoted info makes it sound like you have to replace the motherboard as well, which aren't available for purchase.

I have conflicting information. Does the playstation 4 optical drive replacement guide need to be edited to clear the confusion or does sony not allow the ps4 disk drive to be swapped out? I'm confused.

Hi @gamekid,

Here's the answer I got from our technical writers regarding your question:

It looks like the user is right—the daughterboard is paired to the motherboard, so you just need to retain the original daughterboard to bypass the pairing issue. This Answers post seems to say that the laser calibration will be off, but the replacement will still be usable. You also have to use the same drive assembly? Apparently there are a few different versions. We have no in-house experience with this, so I can't say for sure.

I hope this is helpful!
