The Bug Catchers Net: Q1 2023

Hello Meta!

We really appreciate you sharing bugs (big and small) so we can keep our site running smoothly. Here's our new folder!

For an inside peak on how we do things, as sometimes it may seem like nothing happens with these, this is what we do with your bugs:

  1. I write up your bug in a report for our QA and Developer teams.
  1. QA works their magic to replicate the bug. If we can't make it happen again, we can't figure out how it went wrong.
  2. Once we know exactly what's wrong, QA sends the bug report to our developers where it gets ranked against all the work the developers do (which is a lot). Bugs that are annoying but not preventing the site from working will rank lower than something that prevents users from doing stuff. They also go up against long term projects, improvements, and general maintenance.
  3. Sometimes, if a bug isn't such a big deal and we have a project coming up that will have the developers poking around in the same pile of code, we'll set it aside for when that time comes.

Remember, share as much detail as you have about the bug (the more we know, the faster we can fix it):

  • Where you saw it (URL's are great!)
  • What you were trying to do and what happened instead.
  • Screenshots if you’ve got ‘em!

The issue with the underscores on the DJI Mavic Pro listing is also happening on Google Chrome 110 on Android 13 Feb. 5 2023 security update.

Not sure if this is a bug on intended behavior but now on my iPad (8th generation iOS 16.3.1) the main iFixit.com home page is now the “mobile” version of the website and not the standard desktop version it has been for years. I have tried restarting and clearing Safari cache but that seems to have no effect. I also cannot switch it to the desktop website because it thinks that is the desktop website.

Edit: Apparently somehow my zoom got set to 115%. Was my own error.

We've semi-recently made some minor modifications to our breakpoints to unify behavior across the site, but I'm not sure how that would have affected viewport widths like the landscape iPad 8th.

Is it possible you're viewing the page zoomed in to 115% in these screenshots?

Hi @amber

Possible bug perhaps or perhaps user error - me ;-)

When trying to edit an embedded link in an answer in both Answers and Meta the following occurs:

In answer edit mode when you click on the highlighted embedded link the normal edit/trash options appear for the link.

When you then click on the edit option to view the information and don't alter anything, if you click on Confirm it exits the link edit mode and then if there are other embedded links in that answer (or the same link as before) you can click on them and then edit them as well or not, as before, then exiting from the answer edit mode and returning to the posted answer.

If however you click on Cancel it will exit from the embedded link edit mode but you then cannot edit the same link again or any other embedded link in that answer. You have to exit from the answer edit mode which then takes you back to the posted answer and then start again.

Basically you always have to click Confirm to be able to continue to edit any embedded links in an answer before returning back to the posted answer, because if you click Cancel, you cannot enter embedded link edit mode again- nothing happens when you click on any (if more than one) embedded link in the answer. You have to exit from answer edit mode and start again.

The editor doesn’t like linke breaks.

It doesn’t complain if you paste some text with line breaks p.ex. from word, and it will work, but as soon as you try to edit that text in the editor a couple or all of the line breaks will vanish. This doesn’t happen if you copy paste inside the text with line breaks or you are editing text that doesn’t have a line break in the next line.

It’s been a while but I believe on my PC it removes all the line breaks instead of just the next three like on my iPad.

Update:

I just realised that this doesn't happen with "manually entered" line breaks (shift+enter).

But it happens with any copy pasted new lines from word or new lines that were already saved, like those the editor inserts for line breaks in tables avfter saving.

You can take a look yourself by editing any table, like the one in the android phone wiki.

The editor has no problem saving these new lines again.

These new lines will vanish if you edit the content of the lines, like entering or removing caracters by pressing backspace or del.

Hey, @sedorr. I'm looking into this, and I want to make sure I understand the issue fully.

When you're referring to line-breaks, do you mean a new paragraph (enter - rendered in the diff as a blank new line) or a new line (shift+enter - rendered in the diff as
)?

When you paste text into the editor that has these line breaks, are the breaks showing up in the diff (what shows up under Wiki Text Changes) before you save? And then disappearing when you open and edit the page after saving?

Moving an answer which should be a comment I’ve noticed the view moves to show deleted from the default of oldest or the state you where in before moving the element. We also had a color clue of deleted text elements which has disappeared!

Hey @danj. Thank you so much for reporting. I'm having a little trouble reproducing this, and I have a couple of questions.

1. Are you referring to moderating an answer into a comment? If so, can you confirm my steps:

- Moderate an answer

- Click on "Switch to comment"

- Choose an answer and select by clicking on: "Attach comment to this post"

Once you've done this, it loads the page with "Show Deleted" selected?

2. Regarding the colors, what colors did we used to have? I don't spend much time in the forum, so I'm not sure what we've had recently. I see that we currently have a red banner on answers saying "This post is deleted" and the text bubble emoji next to deleted comments are red.

@guardian10, this is an interesting one! It's definitely bug, but we haven't seen it because we don't ban people for 10 years anymore (that used to be the default time we chose... I'm not sure why) but now we just ban infinitely. AFAIK, this will only happen on Meta but let me know if you see it around elsewhere!

Hi iFixit team,

Just got an interesting one, it's a corrupted link to view the original picture of a guide :

I got this error when trying to view the original picture of a guide. This happened at a specific step for a specific picture.

It seems there is a (very rare) problem with some hosted contents on the ifixit.com S3 object storage, here are some tips :

  • This could be related to ACL or access policy in the S3
  • Or this can be the original file that simply doesn't exist anymore
  • Or this could be a problem in the link generation process
  • Something else (e.g. : incomplete process of the image so the "full" variant doesn't exist in the S3)

How to reproduce :

1) Use the fr.ifixit.com platform

2) Go to this guide : https://fr.ifixit.com/Tutoriel/Toshiba+T...

3) Go to Step 2 of the guide given above

4) At step2 of the given guide above, click on the indicated button ("view original" button) as shown in the picture below (the 2nd picture of the step) :

Note : if it matters (e.g. : for servers location reasons), this action was triggered from France.

Hi @amber,

iRobot problem perhaps.

The answers in this question -see Show deleted, have been deleted by the iRobot for some reason idk.

I've cleaned it up and restored the users rep points but maybe worth looking at as to why they were deleted as they appear to be OK.

Thank you @jayeff. My guess is it's the formatting plus the age of the post. The robot tends to get grumpy if people post walls of text on older posts.

Each time you go in and mark something like that as not spam it trains the robot so you've already done all I would be able to do to prevent it from happening in the future.

When hovering over a right-aligned picture in a wiki the little context menu will be in the position it should have been in, if the picture was left-aligned.

It's happening on both edge and firefox.

On one of the questions in my "Subscribed" view (ifixit.com/Answers/Subscribed), the "Edited" note is in Japanese instead of English (編集済みの回答 instead of Edited). Language and region are set to United States. This is not happening on any of the other questions in the "Subscribed" view.

I got a weird bug when trying to create a device page:

Got the error: "User does not own all of the new images."

The problem is, it was at the creation of a new device page, so I cannot add images I don’t own because the page is not yet created and I added all these pictures with my account to set them on the device page.

How I encountered this bug by doing the following steps:

  1. Go to create a device page
  2. Set the device image
  3. Write something
  4. Add an image in the "Additional Information".
  5. Click preview (I noticed it took a lot of time to load the preview (~30 s)
  6. Then after previewing tried to save and encountered this error.

Interesting facts:

  • So in this device page there are only two images, so I tried to find the incorrect one (there are a schema and a picture of the device itself).
    • So I tried to delete then add the schema again in case it was this picture but encountered the same error while trying to save the page.
    • So I tried to recreate the device image and I was able to save.

So I have a question : what is this error (User does not own all of the new images.) exactly ?

Just noticed something.

We can noticed the schema image was not attached to the device page before, despite I inserted it using the Insert an image button:

This may be related to the bug that caused the error.

@amber I also sometimes encountered this bug. I always assumed it wasn’t a bug and that it checked for some weird metadata thing (it sometimes says that I don’t own pictures that I freshly exported form adobe express), for me removing the metadata helped.

@sedorr Interesting, I created these pictures with GIMP.

If I encountered it again, I will do some more tests and will try to find which metadata is related to this. (probably Exif metadata)

oh lord....

this nightmare started with me wanting to look at my notifications on a hp elitebook i had made run chrome os flex....

yeah i cant get to them in tablet mode! (nor do profile pictures show up)

media manger doesn't work! (my iphone came to the rescue though...)

chrome os flex build 112.0.5615.62 (please please please note this is NOT normal chrome os!!!!! chrome OS flex is a version for windows and mac computers!)

and same number for chrome itself

on a 2018 hp elitlebook x360 1030, and chrome os flex runs perfect on it too, even though its not on the certified models list.

The notification button is supposed to disappear in tablet mode (or any screen width) smaller than 1025(ish) pixels. If you click on your profile picture, you'll see notifications there.

Your media manager should, however, be working. I'll report that. :D

@amber well, we would have never known that media manger wasn't working if i didn't notice notice my notification button was gone, so i guess it was a good thing that i reported it even though its normal and i just never noticed it (how did i not realize that was normal, considering the fact that i use ifixit on my 2016 se all of the time?????), lol :P

Yes, this is what I was talking about. Before, my (default) picture was a... Jackhammer? But around 50 rep, I changed my profile to the magnifying glass with IFixIt logo.

When I try log in on the German store it logs me in and then immediately logs me out right after.

This happens on both my iPad and android. And on both safari and Firefox. I have yet to check on my pc.

@dcliu54265 I don’t know but I haven’t changed any browser settings and you can’t install plugins on iOS browsers so I don’t think so. This also only happens in the store, not the main site and the store doesn’t ask for a password when I click on login. It successfully logs me in and then immediately after reloads the page. After the page reloads I’m logged out again.

I would make sure your settings don't default to blocking third party cookies; for example Chrome's Incognito mode has third party cookies blocked by default.

Also, when you say that it reloads the page do you mean like the page refreshes on its own?

Hi iFixit team,

I noticed this guide (here) was at the root of the laptop Toshiba category, but it was related to a Chromebook device page that exists but was empty (here), so I decided to move it to the appropriate device page. But it was not easy as when I tried to select the new device from the typehead field (the autocompleted list), it won't select the correct device.

I found a bug in the typehead of the Device selection when I edited a tutorial to move it from a device page to another.

The bug is :

  • When I select an entry from the "Device" typehead, this entry is not selected and if I save, it creates an empty device page and move the page, making the user think he selected the correct device but it's not the case.

How to redo the bug :

  • Go to a guide and try to change the device it belongs to.

  • Search a device page by it's name (partially like this), then click on the device to select it in the typehead by clicking on it.

  • And, the device is not selected but an incorrect page is selected instead.

For now, to select the correct device, I had to type the complete name of the targeted device page for this functionality to work, then I can select it in the list.

Also, I could not finish translating a page because I encountered this error again :

I encountered this error a lot. Is this a kind of new feature to allow only one revision of a translation on a page when a page is protected or something ? Of course, as usual, I tryed to reload the page, clear the browser cache, etc.

The problem with this feature is, I'm used to saving regularly to avoid data loss, but when I come across this error, I'm stuck with unfinished modifications.

If this is a feature to protect content or something, perhaps display an icon or a helper text somewhere on the translation page can help with this as I don't know when I will encounter this error, it's unpredictable for now.

Perhaps it's a kind of feature that's enabled on some pages because it only happens when I'm trying to edit something that's waiting for approval. So if I edited it once, I cannot edit until it's approved or rejected because I get the error :

"Vos modifications n'ont pas pu être enregistrées car la version du document que vous êtes en train de modifier n'est pas à jour. Actualisez la page et réessayez."

But this could also be a bug because I didn't see this error when I began to use iFixit years ago, it could be the revision system counting the revisions awaiting approval as current state of the page but as these revision are not approved the revision system "think" it's content is not up-to-date.

Hi @es_six, sorry for the confusion! We mixed up the guide translation and the wiki translation interface. So yes, something is hindering double user contributions before the first get patrolled. I've approved your last wiki translation so you can go ahead if there is something you want to add. Idk if this counts as a bug, but it’s really hard and sometimes impossible to choose the correct part/tool or create a part/tool wiki on an iPad because the keyboard covers the last entries in the list if there are more than a few results and the list immediately disappears if you close the keyboard.

This is a tough one! I do agree they need to find there way to the never-never land!

Purging too quickly could toss someone who got hovered up by mistake.

@jri_creator pretty standard on my notifications too. One is to notify that somebody added a comment (or whatever), and the other one is because the @ username was used. Seems redundant but standard.
