How to add parts common to several devices?

I'm planning to write disassembly guides for several related electromechanical calculators. Since these things haven't been produced for at least 50 years, I felt it would be helpful to supply detailed specs for each part so that if a part were broken, it could at least be fabricated if a dead for-parts calculator couldn't be located.

Many of the parts are common to all the models, but some are unique to one particular model.

To be clear, the parts aren't standard things like screws, but rather shafts, cams, gears, levers, and so on that aren't commercially produced anymore, but could be fabricated by someone with access to a maker space.

So, what's the best way to handle something like this in iFixit?

I think we've got just the solution you're looking for - you can create your own Items. Both parts and tools are types of items. Plenty of our parts and tools, such as standard screwdrivers and bits were created, photographed and described by iFixit staff, but anyone in the community is welcome to create their own.

A while after you create the item page, it will be indexed by our search engine, and then will appear in drop down menus when you're adding parts and tools to the Meta Information of a guide. Even if your new item doesn't appear in parts and tools lists yet

We're working on an improvement to this process so that your newly created items will be listed immediately in parts & tools drop down menus immediately after being created, but this improvement won't be ready for a while.
