My 54 Bit Driver Kit is getting rust on it, why?

It's got all this rust on the screwdriver bits and I don't even use heaps, it never has been wet either.

Same problem here also with my 2015 set.

Al of a sudden some bits have rust on one side and the flexible extension bit, the rest is good, very strange.

WD40 will probably solve the problem after removing the rust.

Hi Patrick,

I'm sorry to hear that. The bits have a bit of built-in anti-rust property and we've found that that alone is working for about 99% of our customers. Unfortunately the 1% live in very humid climates and have their bits rusting on them. In this case we recommend cleaning the bits and applying a light oil to them. If you're not able to clean the bits please let us know with an email to support [at] ifixit [dot] com. Thanks!

Generally speaking if the rust is so bad you can physically feel it, the bits need to be replaced. Scratching it can usually give you a rough idea on where you stand on being able to clean it. This is because surface rust isn't terminal most of the time, but when you can feel it it's almost certainly beyond repair.

It's still worth trying since the bit is damaged, but don't be surprised if it doesn't work. For me it's usually something where the bits are damaged to the extent they are rusted beyond cleaning. I'm also in that 1% as well, which doesn't help.

My bits seem to be ok, but the flexible extension is all pitted beyond repair.

I've noticed the 6150 bits aren't as bad for me and I'm in the 1% who has had problems with the old driver sets.

What I did when mine was replaced before I used it was soaked the bits in WD40. I don't trust the old bits in high humidity without something since I've had problems before. With that being said, I haven't had rust issues with the WD-40 coated 54-bit driver bits yet.
