The guide for replacing the A1278 dc-in Board on my 2008 mac unibody makes it look doable, but before I order the parts, I'd like to have an idea about how much I'd have to spend for somebody else to do it. (I could not get this information from Apple without making an appointment and paying for a diagnosis.)
Honestly, we don't know. You can try taking it to a couple repair shops to see what they will charge you to do replace the DC-In board, but if there is something more wrong with the machine, it could raise the cost considerably.
However that said, there is something empowering about taking apart your device and fixing it yourself. When you are able to turn on a device that you yourself have opened and fixed, something incredible happens...
You become a fixer.
