The new front page layout sucks.

Hello.

So I noticed the new front page on iFixit yesterday. I just didn't realize what would happen until now.

So I go login to my account, right? Nope. Not there.

If you never seen this, you can see the screenshot here. I do use dual monitors, so I had to do a lot more cropping.

Where's the login option and a way to get your profile from here? I have to go into Repair guides, then find it. It's buried now. This design is awful for the front page. I like the black bars on the top elsewhere, but you're kidding, right? I can't just login to my account or go to it from the front page. That's just dumb.

Am I shocked? No. I suspected this. The start of this was directing logins to the guide directory to get people to fix stuff. I didn't think it would extend beyond that. Even then, the guide directory thing was fine. It didn't bother me. But this change is just annoying at best and irritating at worst. The only thing this is without that is pretty to me. I'm fine with function over form.

Sorry Nick, I like the new layout.

Nick, do you normally log out when you leave the site? For the most part, you should be able to stay logged in and access your favorite parts of the site from the homepage without having to log back in.

by

My browser throws the history away when it crashes or it restarts because Windows Update had a hissy fit when I ignore it. I also respect that, Oldturley. I'm just used to having the profile buttons there.

by

It's OK. ..but I couldn't find meta/feedback on there either. I'm browsing on android phone not the app so perhaps that's it?

by

Maybe. I'm not a fan of phones as main computing devices. I'd use a small laptop or even a Atom netbook over a phone if I had to use something small.

We have updated the homepage to add links to Join / Login (for logged out folks) or to your profile (for logged in peeps).

We cool?

Yeah. It was more of a sudden annoyance at the time, since I just noticed it was gone one day.

Awesome. We're happy to act on feedback.

Well hold on now, that's a tad dramatic. You're right, the link to login is missing from the homepage. We're planning on adding it back in.

Let's save the histrionics for things that truly suck. Like vacuums.

In the short term, you can always go to ifixit.com/login

We work hard on these new designs, and we appreciate constructive feedback.

I wrote this when I discovered it because my browser reloaded. My histiry is set to erase when I close it. I also wasn't aware of that you were adding it back later.

wheres the link to meta gone???

by

@pollytintop it's still in the footer, but it's called "The Watercooler" now.

by

Watercooler? Really? Tony, who's idea was that? That is so eightyish :-)

by

Yup...not a fan of the name. It doesn't give anything away as to function. What was wrong with feedback? Just my "2 cents"
