I see an @mayer now listed on my profile. What does this mean? do I have a iFixit email address now?

Hey Mayer,
We added a Username functionality to our iFixit Profiles and you're one of the first to grab this. While this doesn't mean you get to have an @ifixit.com email address you do get to mention others in comments like this: @mayer

Exactly. And it would allow you to notify me of whatever you're saying in another thread. If I think you might be a great person to advise on an issue I'd say: "Hey, let's ask @mayer but I think that this is related to a faulty button."
So I want to send a notification to Dan, but see no @Dan on his profile. What's up?
Dan hasn't set up his username yet so he can't be called out directly on a comment. We're working closely with all of our members to get chosen usernames up and running quickly.
I think it might be an issue with multiples of the same name. I know of three other Dans floating around here. Besides me @mayer ;-}

So if I want to get mayers attention to check out a comment or some question I think he could address better than others I put in @mayer and he recieves a notification?

Unless you're a good looking female it's hard to get my attention. Problem is, i"m old enough now to be a dirty old man. But what is a dirty old man but a man that still thinks young? I'm not used to the notifications yet as they remain at 100 all the time.
Yes that's exactly as it should work. If you want his attention you @ him and then it pings him with a notification.
You mean to add to the 100 notifications that I haven't looked at yet? Just what are these notifications? I have a hundred on Facebook too. I don't know how to get rid of them.
They can stack up quite quickly. They typically won't go away until you've interacted (clicked) with them to indicate you're aware. On FB I think you can click "Mark all as read" to dismiss them in bulk.
