Can't you fix account to reflect correct voting?

@caitemmasmith

@oldturkey03

I have listened to how votes are calculated and It's still not working. I notice it on Old Turkeys account most of all. It will take 300+ up votes and never max out. Then it may take a day or two to start counting votes again after it gets to the next day. But some days like today, it works correctly. I see my account getting 20 points time and again for an accepted answers but not thirty. Isn't it about time to fix this? Please fix this bug!

Hm. Well you're right,

Block Image

looks pretty odd. We'll into it. In the past we've always found the algorithm to be right, but we do have bugs.

I'll note: there is no specific time we restart the reputation threshold. In 24 hours you can get a max of 300 reputation. So it's relative to what you did in the past 24 hours.

If you took a whole day off and then got 200 reputation in 5 minutes, you would only be able to get another 100 rep for 23 hours and 55 minutes. After 23 hours and 55 minute you would be able to get another 200 rep.

Hey Mayer,

I'd be happy to fix the bug, but I need a little more information. Can you send me specific examples of our points calculating incorrectly? Feel free to email me directly and I'll make sure to get this moving.

Thanks!

Sure just go back and look. Tonight he has 228 when I stopped voting. As for mine look at 5/5/16 for the 20 pointers: https://www.ifixit.com/User/Activity/130...

@mayer it's the same issue that we have had since this discussion Change in upvote credit or just a fluke? I still think all this is caused by the 24 hour clock not being midnight-to-midnight. Check the math on your account for today:-)

To me it looks like if you collected 100 points in 24 hrs on 5/10 it is possible to obtain 300 on 5/11 I know it is simplified but that's is what it looks like to a simpleton like myself.

Well it looks like I got 289. But the previous day it maxed out. We'll see when and if the clock starts today. Then your account takes another 44 votes and maxes out this morning. But it appears the badges are based on a mid-night to mid-night basis. So why the 20 points for an accepted answer and several in a row? I'm going to have to take my shoes and socks off to count this up. Hope all my toes are still there or it's really going to mess my ciphering up. Yep it looks like 200 is still equal to 0b11001000 in binary.

Yup. none of this would have been an issue if they would have left midnight-to-midnight for both counting algorithm...but somebody in 2015 had to mess with it;-)

Wonder just what the purpose was because it sucks in my opinion. Of course I believe " if it ain't broke don't fix it!"

@mayer There are several reasons, but the main one is: Rolling over at "midnight" isn't fair.

"Midnight" is relative to where you are. Trying to figure it out relative to your timezone is very computationally difficult (and easily wrong/gamed).

Having a single time "12:00 PST" could cause some people to get the roll over in the middle of their work day. So, in the course of say, 2 hours, they could get 300 rep before the roll over, and then 300 right after by being "Active" in our forum. They could get 2 days max rep (600) in ~2 hours.

If we wanted the same perks, we'd have to stay up until midnight!

It also encourages "burst" behavior. People will be less likely to answer at the "end" of a day because their reputation won't be reset until the next day.

Using a rolling timeline, it's much more encouraging to the individual. If you regularly answers questions at 8am, your rep will probably be getting released around that time too.

Well Chris let me ask you, "who's doing the voting?". Can we see some statistics on that? And who's answering the questions? Who's answering the questions about Macs and their parts, you know the stuff that keeps you in business? It's sure not you, looks like you vote about once a year for the last five years.
