What is 'This is a featured item'?

Title would be "What is Guide > Details > Tools > 'This is a featured item'?", but 'Titles must be at most twelve words long before they may be posted.'.

In /Guide/intro/meta/1:

<input type="checkbox" id="toolsEditFeatured" class="itemEditFeatured" />

<label for="toolsEditFeatured">This is a featured item</label>

This is not explained in documentation /Help/Guide_Details.

What is this checkbox?

Hi there! Featuring items highlights them in the list of required parts/tools, like this:

This doesn't change anything about the structure of the guide, and isn't currently implemented in our upcoming new guide view. So for now, don't worry about it :)

In the future it may be an admin-only feature.

This answer was originally to another question.

The featured item button is designed to allow you to make a item you need for a guide more prominent then the other tools/parts on the list. It's primarily used to make parts you need "stand out" from the rest of the parts/tools list. You can only flag one item as "featured", so you need to choose wisely.

One example of this is if I make a guide working on a laptop and I need to replace the hard drive is I can flag the hard drive as a "featured" part, since it is (arguably) the most important. I may still have other parts listed like 7mm and 9.5mm hard drive bumpers on the parts list, but the hard drive (and any supporting notes like "If you replace the factory 7mm hard drive with a 9.5mm drive, you will need 9.5mm drive bumpers.) will be the most prominent.

To see this in practice, look at the Xbox One 1697 magnet adjustment guide. In this guide I have extra controller and a Butane lighter flagged as featured items. I chose to flag the lighter over the portable soldering iron because I personally feel using a lighter on plastic is safer then a torch (even a butane torch at a low setting). While I'm able to set the flame and temperature to a comfortable level by feeling the heat (I obviously don't touch the flame) on a butane torch to make it "plastic safe", many people don't know how to do this. For that reason, I advise against anything that acts like a butane torch. If someone decided to ignore that warning, then I made it clear a torch is NOT a good choice. While it may be inconvenient to get a lighter like the Ronson Jetlite and Zippo lighter fluid since these ship empty (along with many other refillable lighters), I'd rather recommend that combination then a butane torch. You need to be able to adjust the flame and oxygen to the point it consistently lights AND isn't overly hot. Not only is this difficult and time consuming, it's difficult for most people who look at iFixit guides to figure out.

I flagged LEGO minifigure in a teardown. Didn’t come up

You need to have a 3 items listed for the featured item option to work.

I do. Including the the featured item.

You need 3 items per parts/tools to make it work. Having less then 3 on the side you want to feature something on will make featuring items redundant.

Parts and tools are not in the same category in iFixit guides. These are separated and can't be merged.
