What's up with ifixit.org comments?

I was reading the post by Julia Bluff about the Design Defect on the iPhone 6 Plus which I thought was pretty good. But what is going on with the comments? Looks like spam and foul language has finally taken a foothold. I am not one to say that comments should be edited or censored, but maybe using the same filter as "Answers" should be up for consideration. I am not a prude but there is a time and place for it. Or maybe I am just getting to old for this. Just a thought.....

Hey Old Turkey!

Glad you liked the article.

In terms of the comments, that's mostly my call. I try to leave as many comments up and untouched as possible—mostly because I don't want to censor anyone's opinion. Even if it's a negative opinion. Even if they use all the salty language under the sun. As long as they're using the comments to state opinions, provide feedback, or express legitimate criticism, then I pretty much let it stand. The only time I delete something is if it's a vulgar personal attack. Every once and a while, I miss one on stories with a high volume of comments. (I found one in the comments of the Touch Disease story, and deleted it.)

We do have a spam filter on the blog that catches nearly all of the comments made by the more obvious spammers. But some slip by the filters. I'll be more vigilant about manually culling those out in the future. Sorry about that!

We could certainly impose stricter filters for the blog to make the comment section a happier place, but I think there's a bit of a difference between the comment section on the blog and Answers. iFixit.com is a community—and there needs to be rules to keep the community productive. For me, the comment area on a blog is more a place for expressing opinions, so I've pretty much let them do that.

Anyways, that's my two-cents. But I could be wrong. I'm certainly open to ideas on how to improve iFixit.org! And I'll chat about this with the rest of the team. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

@Julia, I am in agreement with your stance on censorship. That is not necessarily where I was going with that. It was more of the spam (expressed as well as implied) than the negativity I was referring to. While reading the comments I thought that it started to look a bit like Yahoo Answers;-). Again, this is just the opinion of some old dude so not really a big deal.

Keep those great stories coming and I will just have to stay away from reading (into) the comments.

Sometimes I stay out of the comments, too. :) I'll keep an eye out for the spam that makes it through our filters though and do some more rigorous weed-whacking.

Hey @oldturkey03 , I've always wondered: What's the backstory on your username?

by

@julia many, many years ago (almost 25) I started playing one of my first multiplayer games. All my coplayers were considerably younger than me and my favorite drink at the time was Wild Turkey. So somehow, somebody decided that my "callsign" should be Old Turkey. To much Wild Turkey and fat fingers turned that into oldturkey after the 3 attempt :-) lol

I know. Not much of a story but thanks for asking.

I'm in line with Mike on this. There are plenty of other sites where you can be crude rude and socially unacceptable. I'd rather be labeled an old prude than be associated with a site that allows vulgarities. There is a time and place for it but I don't want it where I live, and I live here. So I'll continue to cut the crap when i find it. You can always limit my moderator powers or ban me from the site. Because I intend it to be a place that I'm not ashamed of being associated with.
