Here's a tidbit on what may explain Samsung's Note 7 battery fires

Tightly packed battery may be responsible for Samsung’s Note 7 disaster

This could explain why Apple spaced out the batteries in the new MacBook Pro's and iPhones. They saw the problem when they hit it with swelled batteries in the earlier MacBook Pro's.

Samsung is releasing update that disables charging completely, Samsung pretty much just killed themselves.

This opens an interesting consumers' rights can of worms with some power players on both sides. Verizon is actually refusing to push this update to their customers.

Here's a good write up on what they will be doing: Samsung update will brick remaining Galaxy Note 7 devices.

@evan - Doesn't that just put Verizon in the hot seat for someone to go after if the phone kills someone or creates property damage?

At least Samsung has done their do-diligence so any newer events won't be on them.

I think since Samsung issued an official recall through the Consumer Product Safety Commission and Verizon is willingly taking back any Note7 devices, they are absolved from any liability that comes from exploding phones. In fact, I think carriers are likely to get in trouble for bricking phones without their customers' consent, regardless if it is for their own well being or not.

I think Verizon's decision is based [at least in part] on the fact they don't want to cancel/violate existing contracts or invest any more resources in this debacle (since I imagine mobile carriers will have to reimburse customers for the inconvenience).

They've probably calculated the risks associated with both options and decided since they're liable for people not having access to emergency services, but not for exploding phones it was in their best interests to not push the update. They'd be in hot water regardless of their decision—Verizon's just taken the option that opens them up to the least exposure.
