Will the 64-bit driver kit fit in the classic Pro Tech Toolkit roll?

So, I have the classic Pro Tech Toolkit and am happy with it, at least for now. I like one thing about it the new one has better, though. The part I prefer about it is the inclusion of the tech knife. The new one does not include it, although I understand it's likely easier TSA compliance. It doesn't bother me enough to skip it since the blade it uses is cheap and most knives like it are using the same blade, but it's nice to have it in the toolkit without having to buy it insovidually. I also do not travel much so I can take a note to remove it if I need to take it with me.

My main issue has always been the driver handle with the 54-bit driver kit. It is too thin and has too little torque, and easily slips. I have had 2 incidents where screws have stripped, and had to get a cheap driver set locally to deal with it the 2nd time. I also thought about buying the handle and storing it somewhere in the toolkit but I might as well get the whole driver set. The reason for this is the low bit count before it's no longer worth buying bits for the 54-bit driver and it's about the same cost to replace the whole driver set.

Another problem I have noticed is the clip on the 54-bit case cracks over time.

The calculations I did to get this are as follows:

  • 54-bit: 4 bits (4 bits @2.95.bit . Total for bits is $11.80 and $5 to ship. Total cost is $16.80. Price of 54-bit was $19.95).
  • 64-bit: 9 bits (9 bits @$2.95/bit. Shipping is $5. Total cost is $31.55/34.95).

Seeing as I will probably lose 4 bits to wear or lose them first, it's probably better to buy the driver kit rather then the handle. However, this opens up a problem, because it may not even fit. I did a measurement of the screwdriver area and got 4 1/2 Horizontal and 9" for Vertical for the screwdriver area. Since I have dimensions to work with, I can get an idea if the new driver set would work as a retrofit. I don't know if I can since I do not have the size for the 64-bit driver kit. However, I want to be sure so I know how well it will fit.

Hi Nick!

Thanks for reaching out. The product dimensions for the 64 bit kit are listed on Amazon as: 1.6 x 8.1 x 4.9 inches.

I think that the increased width of the 64 bit kit might make it difficult for you to roll up your Classic Pro Tech. It might feel a little empty in the top and bottom, as well, since the 64 bit kit is shorter overall than the 54 bit kit.

Hope that helps!

That's what I was concerned about. I never really had to worry before, but since the 54-bit was discontinued it's an issue. I already knew it was shorter, so I was aware of that problem.

I highly recommend upgrading to the new Pro Tech, fwiw. It's got a smaller overall footprint, so it fits better in bags on the go. It's also just so sleek! I love the look of mine. Very professional. And if you've still got the order number from your Classic kit, you've still got the Lifetime Warranty on that tech knife, and could always request a replacement from the customer service team. We're always happy to help with that kind of stuff. :) There's space for the tech knife in the new Pro Tech tool roll, if you don't mind adding or swapping out tools to the pouches. Personally I just keep my old tech knife in my purse--more handy for me that way. You're right that the newly designed driver handle is more than worth the upgrade. You're really getting your money's worth when you upgrade to the new Pro Tech.

It's the 54-bit case I have the problem with. It doesn't close right since the latches no longer work right and the tab on the case that opens it cracked. I got mine at Radio Shack and scanned the receipt when I got it.

I use a 16" laptop case when I go out, despite my fleet being 14-15". I usually keep a charger, papers and my laptop (14"). If I have to go to a place to get something but they want the drive I have my Pro Tech there as well. I used to keep two batteries and a charger but one of my packs had a cell failure where one ran noticeably hotter in sleep mode then the rest of the pack.

Understandable. Did you know you could request a new case for the 54-bit kit? We won't have them forever, since we're running through our stock moving to the new kits and cases, but I think we still have a couple at the office. Can you email support@ifixit.com with a copy of that RadioShack receipt (or a picture of your personal toolkit, to stand in as proof of purchase)? You can put "Attn: Annette" in the subject line, and it'll get routed to me. Please include your current shipping address in the email so that I know where to send the new plastic case to.

I got it done already. My kit was so bad they replaced it with a whole new one. I didn't get it done until it was bad because it was still usable. I just had to be careful with the driver kit.

I fit tested the 64-bit driver kit in the classic Pro Tech. As you can see, it's a very tight fit. I would not say the fit is anywhere near satisfactory, so it's not a good idea to try. It's particularly bad at the bottom, because the bulge prevents it from closing properly.

I have a hunch you may be able to lose the ESD strap and suction cup, but this something I wouldn't recommend.
