Pet Peeves about this site

I just wanted to know all of your pet peeves about people on the main ifixit site.

I really have 3

1. When people give you no information and expact you to help them

2. When people ask a question in a comment or answer on a post thats a few years old

3. When people try and answer a question that was answered years ago and the original answer is better then theirs

EDIT: 4. The people who make annoying accounts with long random names that make posts of just a really long list of phone numbers

So let me know what your pet peeves are, i want to know.

Hey Cameron,

We appreciate the feedback! The Answers forum is definitely something we're looking to update. Do you have any ideas on how you could solve your list of pet peeves? #2 frustrates me a lot—we see it everywhere!

Well an idea for number 2 and 3 as well is if a post has already been answered, after maybe a year, people can no longer make an answer on it, only comment. For number one, have a min number of characters like in comments. make it like 200 or 300 because i feel that any less wouldnt have any useful info

by

@cam2363 That won't work well. Reason is that new products, procedures, discoveries, solutions, class action law suits come along and change things.

by

@kaykay Congratulations on keeping your job for two years ;-) Please don't leave!

by

@kaykay Congratulations on 2 years Keep up the great work.

by

@mayer I'm not going anywhere... you're stuck with me ;) @jimfixer Thank you!

One of my pet peeves is people who ignore the words in red that are misspelled. Present company included. Especially the people who are giving answers ;-)

Yes i know i spelled expect wrong. Really funny mayer

by

What's really frustrating about this mayer is that I get those red squiggly lines every time I spell your screen name . Check it out ...type in your screen name(mayer)and see what happens ;-)

by

mayer, @mayer, Mayer, MAYER, sorry Jim, no lines.

by

@mayer sorry for adding a pic to your post but this is what I see when i type your name

by

Hi @jimfixer ,

I get the lines as well but when right clicking on it, it suggests Mayer with a capital letter, no doubt because it recognizes it correctly, as a Proper Noun.

Perhaps @mayer didn't wait long enough for it to show up or that the spellchecker defers to him as it perhaps recognizes who is writing and decides that if that's the way YOU want it that's the way it shall be. ;-)

I've noticed that sometimes it does take a while to show up. (No doubt you get the lines as often as I do Jim when writing answers? In my case, I cannot relearn 60 odd years of spelling English the English way to spelling it the American way, in 12 months)

My pet peeve is the person that posts a question and doesn't stick around long enough to see the great answer someone has left for them or the person who wont answer a comment that is left to clarify there question

Yea that upsets me aswell. Especially when i actually put a great effort to answer it but they just disappear

by

This has almost always been a very thankless job. But it has really gotten better.

by

@mayer You and @oldturkey03 do great work of encouraging others with upvotes. We should all be this good and let our fellow ifixiters know by throwing votes at there good answers

by

This one honestly breaks my heart! You guys volunteer SOOOOOO much of your time on Answers and I wanna vigorously shake folks who don't accept your answers, or give any thanks. We've brainstormed a whole lot of ways to try and improve this, but if y'all have ideas I'm open!

@cam2363 pet peeve of mine are spammers and people that ignore or disregard important information or facts. What really gets my goat is when we think that English is the only language spoken on here. It bothers me that those where English is the second or third language, take some heat for their spelling etc. We all could be a bit more tolerant at times.

No issues with squiggly lines ( I easily ignore those ;-) or questions left as answers. Thanks to the great group we are having, those show up in moderation quickly and get either deleted or properly converted. Let's continue to say thank you for the good answers and let us also reward good questions with some upvotes.

@kaykay leaving? Who said you are leaving? No way are you leaving, you just got here. :-)

@oldturkey03 Cameron is doing well and is giving complete answers, but at 15 needs a little critiquing.

by

@mayer Thanks. Im just trying my best but the tips are definitely helping

by

@cam2363 You reminded me of when I was scouting. I'd ask who knew how to cut up an onion when we were camping. A few hands would grudgingly go up. I'd say, "I don't want you! I want the ones who don't know how. Then I'd go grab them and show 'em how to do an onion in less than a minute ;-)

by

@mayer Thats awesome, im actually going camping next weekend and all were doing is cooking and this weekend were having some new scouts cross over to the troop.

by

@mayer you can cut an onion in less than a minute? prove it!

I am rather new to this site but have been working on stuff my whole life. One thing I don't really like about this site is the fact that one of the members that have been here a lot longer than you can mark your comment down even if its a legit answer. I don't believe just because they have been here longer they should be able to do that. How about getting credit towards the answers that help people! How else are you supposed to get your score up if folks can come in and just down your comment!? If I had a ton of REP and I seen someone coming in answering all the questions I would want to answer what would stop me from just downing their comment!? Thats the ignorance of it.

I looked at your vote history. You have gotten 5 down votes from 2 people. One i don't know. A couple I agree with. You are answering a few questions without getting the facts first. Find out what machine you are dealing with first. This is a common mistake usually made by eager beavers. Just keep working on it. Answering questions well is a learning process. We all make mistakes starting out. If I leave a down vote, I always try to leave an explanation of why. I feel it's somewhat rude to just down vote someone without an explanation. A good answer will usually have a link or two to support it. Try telling someone to put it in rice and then watch the flames you'll get ;-) As for down votes, I've gotten 40 in one day (I disagreed with one of his answers).

Seriously listen to mayer. Hes been a good mentor and im still learing but getting better

Stick to hardware you know and can have confidence in your answer right now. I suggest you look at the E6540 Wiki and the battery question. That's a case where I made the assumption that the person with the battery problem has a model which uses the 130W adapter. I could make that assumption safely since I know the odds of that being the case, if that makes sense. In the Wiki I wrote a section just for known hardware issues, which again I can do since I've lived with that system since ~2014.

The main thing is confidence in the information. If I was not confident in my common fault list and assumption of a 130W i7 system I would not have made it. The question can be found here.

by

Thanks guys but I work on Apple products so those are the ones I have tried to stick with. No I'm not technical when it comes to the "Tech" Language but as for figuring out whats wrong with them and fixing them "hands on" I do have confidence in what I'm talking about. I'll try and get facts straight before throwing out an answer because perhaps I am reading the question wrong and need more information about what the problem is. Thanks for the input and advice. Still doesn't take away the fact that I don't like the Voting people down part.

I'm a bit late here but a lot of good pet peeves.

Mine are:

  1. People who come in a few hours or a a day later and essentially repeat your answer using different words. Are they too lazy to read all the previous answers?
  2. People who give mis-informed answers and then argue with you when you try to set them straight, even when facing incontrovertible evidence.

I agree with those aswell

This is great insight, thanks for sharing! If you have any suggestions for how we can address these issues, I'd love to hear them.

by

@kaykay I don't think there is much you can do from an automated perspective...unfortunately. It's up to the community to vote for the most relevant answers and moderate those that have no value.
