Ideas for guides...I'd like to bounce some ideas

I'd like the elders (@mayer, @oldturkey03 etc) to give me some feedback on some guide ideas I have.

I find that there are a lot of repeated questions on "can I short this cap?" or "how do I test this capacitor/inductor/...?". There is a tremendous amount of info on the web but it is usually either theoretical or 'basic design electronics'. I find that this scares off mobile device technicians who just want to know how to fix, not design their own SMPS or CNC micro-controller. Those are two different audiences. Sadly, there are very few classically trained electronics technicians out there and most of the current mobile technicians know nothing or very little about electronics.

So i'd like to do a series on how to troubleshoot shorts, test passives, read schematics etc, focused on mobile repair. Obviously this wont help the Rany's of this world but that's not the point anyway.

You guys are experienced electronics techs, more so than I seeing as how I spent a good chunk of my career on the dark side, so I'd like your input as well. Let me know what you think.

Cold solder repairs would be nice. Designing SMPS or CNC might be way above the heads of our audience, mine at least.

@rany is hard to get to in the Middle East, although I'd very much like to some day.

A good guide on the use of a multimeter wouldn't hurt.

Some input from @kaykay wouldn't hurt as she probably knows what line of parts is coming next.

Here are guides for creating guides:

Yeah, that was my point. Most websites that talk about capacitor or inductor theory show you how to design complex systems. I want to focus on the essentials for repair.

We actually do have a (very basic) How to Use a Multimeter guide—it's in the Electronics Skills category. I would love any suggestions for improvement, as it actually gets a fair bit of traffic. If someone wanted to make a Part 2 guide for more advanced techniques like measuring current, that'd be really cool!

@refectio great idea and we started discussing this a while back. Check Are there any plans in taking iFixit into a different direction? for a bit of an introduction. It'll be great if we could do it but it always seems to fall apart since we are getting into the "Pro's" vs. volunteers. I started with this Wiki but found there was just not to much interest. that goes back to what you said about " most of the current mobile technicians know nothing or very little about electronics." and may not be willing to learn. I think we have a good core group of people with some cohesiveness on here, that I would be willing to try it once more.

@oldturkey03, I was planning on making sort of an ifixit answers getting started guide for tips on navigating the forum and such. Do you mind if I use your profile page as a "model" for some tips?

@pccheese of course you can.
