Has this site lost its professionalism?

I look at some of the discourses going on in the answers and have serious doubts about how our answers will be taken when there is such childish rhetoric going on.

@mayer I can understand your concerns. I can't speak for the company as a whole when I say this, but I do think a bit of playful banter can be helpful in cementing the community aspect of a successful forum. It's true that most people come to iFixit for quality information, and can do without the social niceties. It's tough to stay on topic 24/7, though. I know my customers usually appreciate it when I take a "real" approach with them, since we're all human. Much better to be speaking to a supportive human than a robot!

That said, I'm not sure playful banter could be considered "repair-related," and I'll leave it up to the other iFixit staff members if they want to moderate any of those comments. It was all happening in a comment thread instead of inside the answer, and that's good because a lot of users won't bother expanding all those comments to read through everything. That's one of the top benefits of voting an answer Most Helpful--casual forum visitors don't have to scroll through everything to find the best suggestion for moving forward with their repairs/troubleshooting. :)

It was requested that this banter be confined to the meta site.

@annettefuller - I agree a bit of banter is OK. I also don't want a sterile space either.

I guess the issue is more of spilling out the chatter into its own space were a dialog of methods can be discussed without confusing the OP.

True, the comments do collapse, maybe its me I always read them ;-} Most people do look. Thats were I get worried when they get confused on what is the real answer.

by

@annettefuller thank you Ma'am and I appreciate your wise input.

@mayer - I agree!

We have a group of younger folks who have a very different view of life. Not much we can do to alter that.

But, we can try to pull this 'loose' dialog out, which is were I was hoping we could open up a more 'chatty' space so the thrust is on the answer not the chat people appear to want to do within the Q/A space.

What I'm hoping we can have a two-way link that links the chat between the two spaces. So in this case the argument on using Rice would be the chat. A focused answer on why it fails to work would be the answer as well as what is needed to clean the device.

@annettefuller @mayer @danj I do not see that the professionalism is at stake here. What I do see are some bright people getting of topic. It is our responsibility to keep the chaos organized. Gentlemen, this is the job of the moderators. We need to ensure that answers and questions are appropriate and stay on topic. If we are so against it then why did we not moderate it? Instead we are suggesting that ifixit as an organization provides us with another place of idle chatter? I do not see that the argument about using rice as a tool is the chat, I look at that as needed to eliminate the myth about using it. It's the talk about rice as a dish that is the chit chat. Let the posters know to continue those talks on here. Why are we going to add another answer, that does not reveal any new information compared to the original answer? Gentlemen this is our doing!

I have taken the liberty of removing the chit chat from that particular question.

@annettefuller @mayer @pccheese @danj @nick and again we are going way off topic. I shall delete the comments within the next few hours. Once more my point. Not a lack of professionalism but bright people straying off topic.

by

Fair point, @oldturkey03 . :) I would definitely read a more "scientific" approach to why rice is or isn't a good desiccant. I'm sure the team would love to have that to link our users to when they come to us with questions of liquid damage, too. :) Thanks for the intelligent discourse, friends!

by

Oh, and since @oldturkey03 will be cleaning up these comments anyway, I should let all our fabulous moderators know that I'll be leaving the team on June 30th! I'm starting a new job with Omni Group, a Mac software company up in North Seattle. So I won't be monitoring Meta on the weekends anymore. Sorry about that. :( I appreciate all that you do more than words can express. Keep on doing your awesome work, bringing repair and repair knowledge to the masses. It's been an absolute pleasure to work with all of you. <3

by

@annettefuller Oh no! Well, don't forget about all of us. We'll be thinking of you! Really hate to see you go.

by

@annettefuller darn I hate to see you go. I always liked your cool calm and wise answers. I wish you and your family all the best. I know you will continue to be successful, that is just who you are. Thank you for having been there for us. If you ever need anything, you know where to find us.

Andulace, which I found out about and have been modifying the crap out of

Lime, cilantro, jalapeño, pineapple which pairs well with pork. The andulace calls for sugar, mustard seeds and water

I agree with @danj it started with the boys. I'm not going to name them, you know who they are. However, when the boys hit the scene it created a community. It really wasn't one before then, we can argue about that later. I think it's a positive. But I also agree. We need a seperate area, probably here, where we can run out not work/problem solving banter. As a volunteer and the actual iFixit team, it's important we work together. I have a think tank on my side, when finding new problems! It's friggin great! That stuff needs to be removed from the answers? As it distracts from helping the community. I noticed it and agree with you @mayer (ut oh edit:I said the wrong uncle again) I remember that question specifically. We all played our part and Aaron Bouchard didn't really help to alleviate it. Btw my comments were really funny, you can't argue that. The banter needs to be removed. It turns a simple answer(s) into a large topic and will confuse these people. With not the friggin answer, basically. But us as a volunteer community is super important. Unless you guys wanna moderate for the next six years?

If I could give you 10 upvotes I would.

I'm not kidding. Without you two, it was a lot more two uncles and some wandering Cowboys. With that being said, and you two start it more than anyone, the small talk needs to come here. I love the week long topics. But the questions for the public that are counting on us, need to get straightened up, ok?

by

Yes, I understand. I try not to start it but sometimes I can't help myself when the conditions are prime. Funny, it almost always devolves into food subjects.

by

I know. We both like food quite a bit @pccheese here I'll post today's ...linner in my comment

by

I have to agree with @theimedic on this. I don't mind risking going off-topic in Meta once in a while like we did on the Linux post where I went into extended detail on why Unity is branded as spyware, but I like to keep that stuff isolated in places like Meta; it doesn't belong in Answers.

Jeepers cats! Ah, who needs it fancy? As long as it's cheesy it's good. Just Get down on it.

I've made some killer grilled cheese that wheren't too pretty.

by

@pcheese That's mozzarella flowing out from between the Canadian bacon. So it's cheesy. Actually people will eat more slowly and proportionally, if it is attractive and appreciate the artistry of a chef. It's the difference between having class and being a slob. Take pride in what you do, others will appreciate it. You eat with your eyes. Here are some good tips on plating:

I take it back. Ooh, Canadian bacon and mozzarella (with an Italian accent)!

by

Yeah, @mayer. But it was sautéed potatoes with steak and sautéed carrot with a hot mustard sauce. I got another one for ya

by

Btw @mayer kabobs looks great. Finally got around to those strawberries I see

@pcheese see, just a little effort really kicks these dishes up!

BTW kaykay, will I be cooking with you at the un-conference?

You cook too? I can't find a woman that I don't intimidate in the kitchen. I don't think i would intimidate you.

by

I been cooking alongside mama since I could walk :) Let's cook together at Unconference :)

by

@kaykay that looks photoshopped! I will bring the induction oven to the conference, we see whose got skills then

by

@theimedic Don't press your luck! (Hint: Other people don't like cheese us much as we do! ;-)

@theimedic Oops, I ment the food I ate. Other people in my family made that, but I tell you it's delish!

by

Somebody in your family can cook, maybe more than one. It's been a long time since I hand made Hollandaise in a double boiler.

by

@mayer Grandpa bakes bread, Mom cooks specialty, Dad grills and deep fries, Grandma makes all kinds of stuff, and sisters make desserts. But everyone fades the line, and does everything. I? I make eggs and grilled cheese. I also have the self proclaimed title of "The frozen Meister" because I take frozen food and make it good. I don't cook much.

by

It won't be many years till you're out of the house and on your own. Learn all you can while you can. You won't like living on grilled cheese and frozen foods.
