The Bug Catchers Net: Q1 2024

Hello Meta!

We really appreciate you sharing bugs (big and small) so we can keep our site running smoothly. Here's our new folder!

For an inside peak on how we do things, as sometimes it may seem like nothing happens with these, this is what we do with your bugs:

  1. I write up your bug in a report for our QA and Developer teams.
  2. QA works their magic to replicate the bug. If we can't make it happen again, we can't figure out how it went wrong.
  3. Once we know exactly what's wrong, QA sends the bug report to our developers where it gets ranked against all the work the developers do (which is a lot). Bugs that are annoying but not preventing the site from working will rank lower than something that prevents users from doing stuff. They also go up against long term projects, improvements, and general maintenance.
  4. Sometimes, if a bug isn't such a big deal and we have a project coming up that will have the developers poking around in the same pile of code, we'll set it aside for when that time comes.

Remember, share as much detail as you have about the bug (the more we know, the faster we can fix it):

  • Where you saw it (URL's are great!)
  • What you were trying to do and what happened instead.
  • Screenshots if you’ve got ‘em!

As always, thank you for your dedication to our site!

Amber, if you may recall, a while back I mentioned an issue where for some reason, I couldn’t initiate votes to accept a solution on specific answers. Now, back then, this only happened when I tried to initiate a vote on an answer made by a moderator/admin (and even then, not always). However, it seems that either this bug has returned, or has gone unnoticed. In either case, the bug has gotten worse, as now I can’t initiate an “accept solution” vote on this answer by a regular user (although the bug also still exists in its original form, such as on this answer).

Attached are pictures of what is shown in the moderation menu.

@shingle, thank you! Let me and @evanga2so look into this and see what could be going on.

by

@shingle, we finally crawled out of the rabbit hole that your question took us on :)

Here's what we found out.

You will only see "Accept as Solution" as an option if you are the one asking the question. If you're not the one asking the question then you have to wait a week before you can accept it as a solution.

Hi @krisrodriguez

I'm trying to moderate the comment by this user in the Chosen Solution to a new question, as the make of their microwave isn't a Kenmore but an Amana so I didn't want any answer I provided to confuse others.

The only moderation options that work for me are, switch to an update to a post and the two remove options, spam and duplicate.

I can't switch to an answer or switch to a question. All I get is the spinning wheel - see image

If I uncheck the force vote to pass option and select switch to a question it appears in the Moderation page list OK

I've noticed this problem before and it only seems to happen when trying this in an answer that is marked as the Chosen Solution

@jayeff, thank you. Let me take a look to see what could be causing this. We're still investigating a similar issue with this modal that @shingle reported last week.

by

@jayeff, we went ahead wrote up an issue for this. Should be fixed soon.

Hi @krisrodriguez

Not sure if this is a bug or not but when using the ifixit pdf viewer to view manuals stored on ifixit example there's an option that allows the user to rotate the document to suit.

The rotate icon only shows a 90° right turn and then back again.

Is this that is all that is available or should the document be able to be rotated further?

In the document I linked above to properly view the schematic on p.2 it requires a 90° left turn but when clicking the rotate icon it just goes to the right and then back again.

If that is all there is available could it be added so that the document could be turned either way, left or right then back to centre?

I see what you mean @jayeff, let me check with dev and see what could be happening.

by

@jayeff, It's not a bug—it's just the functionality that we have right now. We agree that a counterclockwise rotate would be nice, but we just don't have that option right now.

by

@krisrodriguez

Thanks.

Hopefully that option won't be too far away in the future

Cheers

Fingers crossed @jayeff.

Hi there! Regarding this product page, under the description "Connect a 2021 and later MacBook Pro with a MagSafe 3 socket to a 96 Watt or 104 Watt USB-C power supply." I'm pretty certain the text should read 140 Watt and not 104 Watt.

Hi @krisrodriguez

The link back to the main Answers Forum page i.e. Answers > which used to be there when viewing a question in Answers and is still there in Meta (see top left side of page) is missing sort of ;-).

By this I mean you have to click on it where it appears in a file string e.g. Answers > device category > individual device which is very confusing as compared to earlier, as there's also an Answers link on the right side of the page which is different

Cheers

@jayeff, This isn't a bug just a new update that we pushed out in an attempt to bring navigation into alignment with other parts of the site. We're also attempting to do a better job of linking between resources tied to the same device.

I've let the team know that you think it's confusing. They are taking that feedback into consideration. Thank you again for spotting this and bringing it up. :)

by

@krisrodriguez

Thanks.

Have noticed since my post that in Meta it has changed from "Answers >" to "All Answers" which is a lot less confusing than what is shown in Answers Forum.

Different for each forum seems odd though or are they trialling for reactions ;-)

by

@jayeff, they would never ;-)

It should be the same now both on Meta and the Forum. Take a look and let me know if it's still not showing up the same.

by

@jayeff, that's actually how it's designed to be.

"All Answers" is the root breadcrumb back to the main answers index on the Forum. If there is no related device to make breadcrumbs (which is always the case on Meta) then we only display the root breadcrumb.

Hi @krisrodriguez

Here's another bug (I think) I noticed in the Answer forum.

It's as per what I wrote in a test answer as seen in the image below.

Just noticed that I added a bit to the wording as seen in the first sentence between the time I copied the answer/preview and I posted the answer. Nevertheless the bug is still there. The links don't work when posted.

Not sure if this already came up, but on some guides, like this one, it still shows the message that there are pending changes even though all changes have already been denied.

@sedorr, thank you for sharing this. I clicked on it, but it doesn't show that there are any "pending changes" on my end. Are you still seeing the error?

by

@krisrodriguez No. It disappeared for me as well, though it was there for a couple of days at least.

by

@sedorr, Thank you for letting me know :)

I'll keep an eye out to see if this happens again. Also, reach out if it happens again for you too.

Hi @krisrodriguez

Bit of a problem at your end methinks.

Went to both websites today and the All and Most helpful answers pages both in Answers and Meta were old pages.

Block Image

Makes it hard to view new questions although it's OK when looking at Unanswered and Newest and also Subscribed answers (but it is the same as above for all and most helpful) in both forums.

First noticed at 0930hrs 29/2/2024 Aust WST (GMT +8)

Cheers.

Update: 15:31 hrs Aust WST. (GMT +8)

Seems to be resolving slowly as it only affecting Most Helpful answers now.

Another bug that is still there at this time is when on Answers Forum (or Meta Home page) → All questions tab → All and select Subscribed tab it switches to Answers forum (or Meta Home) → Subscribed tab → All OK BUT when selecting Answers forum (or Meta Home) → All questions tab again it switches back to Answers forum (or Meta Home) → All questions tab → Most helpful and still shows old pages and not back to Answers forum (or Meta Home) → All questions tab → All where it was before.

@jayeff @krisrodriguez it also seem to default to Most Helpful whenever you start in Answers (any language) which is hasn't done before.,

Anybody else have trouble with copy and paste? I have nothing really concrete other that it happened a few times that whenever I paste into answers, it would make it a duplicate. I cannot reproduce the error and it appears to be random for now.

by

Hi @oldturkey03 ,

I'll keep an eye out for the copy and paste problem (haven't noticed myself yet) but it seems that the other problem of defaulting to Most Helpful has been resolved. It now defaults to All

Cheers

by

@jayeff @oldturkey03, thank you. I'll also keep my eye open for it. If you come across it, just let us know. Thank you for helping us to get this right :)

Hi @krisrodriguez

Possible bug or misinterpretation by user?

I answered a question in Answers, regarding the model number of the battery used in a Lenovo T590 laptop as the OP was confused as to which one was the correct one as shown by searching for it in ifixit parts .

When searching for the part number of the battery i.e. 5B10W13914 (which they found by using the Lenovo Vantage program on their laptop) on this ifixit PC laptop parts page, I got the results as shown, (scroll down the page) hence I can understand their confusion as the model number that they searched for wasn't there.

The ifixit T590 parts list shows that the battery model number is 02DL011 and that is the only one shown. Presumably the OP didn't find this page as they never mentioned it. Looking for battery model number and not for laptop model number parts perhaps, I don't know. Even when searching for 02DL011 it showed other models as well.

Here's an image from the Lenovo website showing all the battery models that are compatible with this laptop.

Block Image

As can be seen in the image the model number which is supplied by ifixit for the particular laptop is compatible. However, ifixit doesn't seem to have the battery model number posted by the OP.

The questions I'm asking is, when searching for a particular part number or type number, what parameters are used so that only relevant results are shown as all the other battery models (bar the first one) shown in the PC laptop parts search list above when searching for the part number, presumably aren't compatible (at least according to Lenovo), which given their different specifications make sense?

Alternatively perhaps changing the script in the PC laptop parts search box from Search PC laptop parts to Search PC laptop model parts might give a less confusing result as seen here

Cheers
