Has anyone rebuilt a rechargeable battery pack?

I was looking through some links for iBook g3 graphics chip repair and came across a youtube site of someone taking apart the battery, desoldering all the connections and replacing the old lithium batteries with new.

As my batteries seem only to have a life of 1 hour max after a full charge and this iBook is 10 years old, buying a battery costs more than buying the laptop.

This may not belong on meta but, just wondering what people think about it as a guide to be made for the site, or has anyone done this repair themselves? Would you consider this too dangerous for the average repairman? If I were to buy the 6 batteries and swap them over it would cost me about $10..or buy a battery pack for $+++.

pollytintop, not sure if you already looked at these. http://www.engadget.com/2005/06/28/how-t... and on here. http://www.instructables.com/id/Apple-Ib... gives yo a bit of an insight what might be required. Also http://www.neufeld.newton.ks.us/electron... and here http://www.ornery.net/2008-01-22/ I am pretty sure you can get it accomplished.

thanks for those links, I watched the youtube thing and had a bit of a eureka moment...I think the 3rd link you've put in looks really good, probably better than anything I can do. It's just that we always recommend getting new power packs/battery packs etc and on a site for recycling and reusing maybe we could be a bit more tangential? Also there's a bit of a heat/moisture/lithium thing in my mind that I think will be off putting to the average joe. I'm going to try this idea out on one of my spares batteries (just waiting for pay day to roll round!)
