MacKeeper (malware) ads appear in your videos

Hi, I often refer to your iFixit repair guides - they are life savers. Recently, when watching a video on an iMac repair guide, a Google ad appeared for "MacKeeper" which is awful malware. I'm not sure if you have any control over what ads appear, but if you do, you should block MacKeeper ads!

Update (11/19/2017)

No, I don't have any extensions. Using Safari on Mac OS 10.11.6. The ad is an overlay (like the ones that appear on Youtube videos)

Check if any browser add-ons you added recently have done this. If you didn't add any, you either picked up a browser extension that pushes ads or installed something that was "recommended" by a free program.

There shouldn't be any ads on the site.

I confirm there is no ads on this video (I tried using Google Chrome browser with normal user agent and a mac user agent and even with a user agent to simulate safari on a mac).

Well, I think I've narrowed down what Info is seeing. Some vids do have YouTube embedded ads! If you look at the time bar you'l see yellow bars these are ad placements! The intro IFIXIT Video Channel Trailer has one.

Sadly, I don't think IFIXIT has control on what YouTube pimps for ads.

YouTube does offer ad free if you pony up ;-}

Yes, I can confirm that the Yellow blip shows on the video, and once the video reaches that point, it invokes a Google-chosen ad to overlay - and the Show in Youtube option appears in the lower right corner. Confirmed for Safari, Firefox and Chrome (all up to date, no plug-ins or extensions). I don't have Flash installed (except built in to Chrome) Thanks.

To block ads I just install adblock plus I highly recommend it. just watch out for sites that say please disable your adblocker to continue. Luckily YouTube does not do that!

Hi Guys!

Thanks for the heads up about the MacKeeper ads. We're adding some filters to our shown ads and hopefully that will fix the problem. If it doesn't we'll look other options including completely demonetizing the channel. Thanks again!

Thanks very much for responding - I don't really mind as ads are easy to dismiss, and I realize it's a function of Google. I'd rather you kept your financial options open because you provide a great service. It's just too bad that Google and Apple continue to allow MacKeeper to spread, it's very curious.
