Can we have a reply button for comments?

One very big annoyance with the forum system on iFixit is the difficulty of replying and getting notifications. I think every comment should have a reply button, and when you click it, it starts a new comment and autofills the users @ tag. I feel like I’m things sometimes, and I’ll go back and look and see a comment I was never notified about, since most users who are new to the site don’t know you have to @ people for them to be notified. Additionally, it seems like some people don’t even had an @ set up, so it’s not possible to tag them as far as I know.

I’m not certain this is coherent, but I tried. Let me know if y’all need anything cleared up, I’d really appreciate this feature.

Also, I hope this isn’t too hard to implement, because it’d probably have to change in the Dozuki API. (right? isn’t that how that works?)

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi Reed. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll pass this along to our dev team.

I agree with you, it would be an excellent idea to put developers at work on this, seeing how many people have troubles to comment an answer and how often they end up answering their own questions proves quite clearly that as it is right now the system is not very intuitive, or user friendly if one prefers.

Thanks for the suggestion :) It took a while to get through our system, but this should be working now.

Wow! All four people here are now listed in the @

Thanks! @sterlinghirsh

@sterlinghirsh - Look like there is a limit on the number of responders it caches! Try adding an Answer and Comment in the Spam folder here. It won't respond sometimes.

There's a limit to how many it will suggest, but if you start typing someone's name, it should update the suggestions within a couple seconds. Though we didn't change any of that last week. It was just adding the Reply button on comments themselves.

Thanks @sterlinghirsh! And thanks for the suggestion @reedcrosby @arbaman @danj.

@kristen Wow, I'm so happy this is finally a thing! Thanks so much! (ignore how horribly late my response is)

@kristen - The type ahead should show a listing of the @ names of the users who have posted before. Sometimes it fails to work. As an example just now I got Reeds name when I typed the @ but yours didn’t, I had to type if fully in.

One thought is being able to copy off the @ name which is currently greyed out just under the persons avatar. I often need to open their info card to copy it to get it right. And have to do this action when I want to address the previous comment owner in my following comment.

Yeah, the automatic suggestions don't work quite frequently. Additionally, I think iFixit should make it a requirement to make an @ in order to participate in the forums, it'd make things significantly easier.

Dan, thanks for letting me know about the glitch with the list. I'll check with the devs to see if it's a known issue. And @reedcrosby makes a good point—it might not be intuitive for new users to @ other commenters. This is all great feedback; thanks!

@kristen Not a problem! If this is added, I think it should be a persistent button, not like the ones that only show when you hover the cursor over a comment (actions, delete, etc.) just for ease of use. I appreciate you passing this along!
