Can I add Video Card categories?

Hi

I were looking at the iFixit Video Card section which mainly has two chip vendors, Nvidia and AMD (neither its own category), and I though that I would add a few device pages for other chip vendors too.

So, I were thinking of making brand/chip vendor categories for the four primary video card vendors/chip vendors (Nvidia, AMD, Intel and Lisuan) and would like some approval before I go ahead, if this sound like a good idea.

The convoluting part is that GPUs (or GPU chips) are designed by a chip vendor, sometimes called reference design owner, and then they have partners (a.k.a. board partners) that manufacture GPUs, on top of the chip vendor themself manufacturing GPUs, which makes naming a little complicated.

Example:

Nvidia is a GPU manufacturer and GPU chip vendor.
Nvidia have designed the Nvidia RTX 3060 chip, powering the Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU.
But Nvidia also have partners that uses Nvidia's chip to manufacture GPUs.
E.g. EVGA (a partner) uses the RTX 3060 chip, and then calls their GPU the EVGA RTX 3060. And this partner may make GPUs on behalf of multiple different chip vendors.

As the different partners are still using the Nvidia RTX 3060 chip (in the example), I would like to categorize them under Nvidia as a category, and the same goes for the other GPU chip vendors (i.e. AMD, Intel and Lisuan). Does this sound like a good idea?

(Note: I've omitted the GeForce name in the GPU names above to make it a little easier to read.)

There are also a few miscellaneous video cards, should those go into a "Other Brand Video Card" category, or should they just be left alone in the "Video Card" category?

I also noted inconsistent naming scheme/nomenclature among Nvidia's video cards, some of Nvidia's video cards have Nvidia prepended and some omit the brand name, should that be addressed? Can I add Nvidia to all of the video cards directly manufactured by Nvidia?

The same goes for the GeForce naming among Nvidia board partners, some of the titles has GeForce, some of the titles omit GeForce, even though the full name is with GeForce, e.g. EVGA GeForce RTX 3060.

Summary:

  • I want to make video cards categories, does this sound like a good idea?
  • Were to place miscellaneous video cards?
  • Inconsistent Nvidia and GeForce naming scheme, what to do about it?

Thanks in advance,

Cheers

An on-site example how it is done in another category would be Phones.

We have Google who makes the Android operating system, Google also makes their own phones (Google Pixel). Then we have "android partners" that makes phones using (their own flavour of) Android, like Samsung and OnePlus. In that case we sort based on phones using Android, with manufacturers/partners underneath the Android Category.

The same would be for Windows Phones. Microsoft makes the Windows Phone operating system and Microsoft also makes their own phones, the Microsoft Lumia. Then we also have "Windows phone partners", e.g. Samsung and HP that make phones using the Windows Phone operating system, which is sorted underneath Windows Phone as a category. In this case Samsung actually makes phones for both Android and Windows Phone.

@meekvixen I'd leave the full GeForce (or any other descriptor), then nobody will need to clarify what is or is not included. Maybe a blurb in the additional info space could clarify that better.

Definitely add a Miscellaneous category for those rare and maybe even vintage cards. After all, retro computing is a relatively hot market. I agree with you on the rest of the categorization.
