Can the camera be removed from Droid X and not replaced?

Can the cameras be removed (and not replaced) from Droid X phones without damaging the rest of the functions of the phone?

I have heard that this can be done with iPhones. I haven't been able to find anything on-line about taking out a Droid X camera and not putting in another camera.

I am asking this for three reasons: 1) I am not allowed to have a camera phone at my job; 2) I like the droid phones better than the iPhones at this time; and 3) I would be able to use my husband's old phone, which would save me money.
