Collective thread on ideas to make the webserver on the LJ 1012 work.

This thread is more of an log for the LaserJet 1012 guide I mentioned very clearly the utilities do not work through normal means. As such, even though at the moment I really don't have plans to mess with a Windows XP VM to keep trying I would at least like to start a thread for us to collect or ideas on making it work.

I could leave you guys high and dry on this issue, but I'd rather give you hints on what doesn't work so we have ideas on this issue. This thread exists for people who want the tools, but at the same time don't have access to Windows XP Physicals or a good supply to rely on. I would like this thread to exist as a guide on what does, doesn't and what isn't practical to fix the problem

Background on the issue

This printer came out in 2003, from the limited information I have on it(and looking at my tag) so as of 2015 it's 12 years old. When Vista came out this printer was about 4 years old(not to forget the nightmare Vista compatibility is). As such, this thing is old in the printer world, but it's still a tank and they can be had very cheaply today. This makes them worth a look despite being so old.

I like these for small use printers but the toner capacity(approx. 2k pages) doesn't make them ideal medium volume machines. They'll work for light use but if you need a higher capacity find a 12x reman toner(lasts about 3.5k pages) or something similarly old like the 1200. These are much more ideal for heavier use. They'll work for most users but to be honest I find the toner life weak. I would prefer 2 12A toners or find a 12X toner. If I could have this and a 1200n I'd be happy(or even a used p2055dn). This doesn't make it bad but it does make it a bit high cost to heavier users.

Either way, it's still a solid printer. HP made these too well and they don't die for this reason.

What I tried

Windows XP Mode-failed. Driver didn't install. XP mode makes this impractical.

Windows XP VM(30 day evaluation period in VMware Player)-sorta worked. I got the driver installed but that's it. I could not get it to run the web server.

.inf file modification-failed. Flat out rejected. Try this for yourself anyway. I suck at .inf file modification.

Compatibility Mode-failed. Rolled back once it got later through and seen I was playing it.

Direct run from the extracted folder-failed. Same issue.

Compatibility Mode on the main screen-failed. Rolled back install.

Compatibility mode on every .MSI and .exe-failed. Rolled back.

Is it to say I didn't miss something? No. That's why I'm posting this. Maybe someone has a better solution I missed. I have a theory VirtualBox may work with a little work but I'm sure it will end the same way as VMWare Player did.

As such I'm handing this off to someone with the time to try who is interested in getting the fame for something I gave up on. My failure is your chance for fame on this issue. HP doesn't care about the printer, but we may have ideas on getting the tools to work outside of an actual XP machine.
