Is it possible that ifixit gave me a defective battery?

My ipod got very hot while charging and refused to turn on. Black screen. I purchased a new battery, installed and charged it. The ipod is unlocked(not on orange) and still has a black screen. I tried to refresh, but it's unresponsive. Could the battery be defective?

Have you tried connecting the iPod to iTunes to see if it is recognized? That' d be the first place I would start with.

Could you please provide clarification as to which model iPod you are having this issue with? It could be possible that your issue is a result of a defective hard drive. If the hard drive is failing, it can cause the device to overheat, even with a propoerly functioning battery.
