Some new moderation functionality tweaks

Our update right before the weekend changed things quite a bit, and from watching the voting activity and talking with all of you, we decided to make a few small tweaks.

The biggest change:

We changed the "Close as not repair related" to "Close as not answerable" and added a "Remove as not repair related" button that deletes a question without removing reputation from its owner.

Some thoughts about dealing with borderline questions

Off-topic questions should be deleted and removed, while relevant 'questions' that don't have enough information to be answered should be closed. That's it! If we vote on questions quickly as soon as they come in, then we will increase the likelihood of a positive result for the poster, and prevent backlogs like we've got right now.

  1. If a new question doesn't have enough information to be answerable, your options are to do any of (and possibly all) these:
    • Vote to close as unanswerable
    • Add a comment requesting clarification (optional)
    • Vote down the post (optional)
  2. If a new question is offtopic, just vote to remove as not repair related. Let's get these off the site as fast as we can.
  3. If a post is spam, vote to remove as spam / offensive. If the vote passes, this penalizes the poster's reputation. You are all historically very good at this, and thankfully spam just hasn't been an issue.

A few other tweaks

We changed the way that closed questions work. Now, if a question is closed, it won't show up on any index page, but it will show up on a user's profile. Closed questions may now be edited by their owners, but no others. When this happens, the question is re-opened.

We added pagination on the Moderation tab, and made the sorting more intuitive. Along with the other information we display, we now show the date of the last vote on each vote.

We changed the location of the Moderation page and its RSS feed, so you should update your links.
