FYI - 'Thin Series' iMac hinge issue admitted to by Apple!

I've seen over eight of these hinge failures! The issue is a defect in the design! Apple is now admitting to the problem.

If you get one in I recommend the customer bring it to an Apple Store or Authorized Service Center and it should be done for free!

Wow, it's nice to see them recognize a design defect and take care of people. Are there any old answers that we should go back and update?

Not quite, @kyle. When Apple does a internal recall like this don't expect them to help people easily. This is when Apple is still trying to hide the defect. They will have to put up a fight for this one until Apple gets sued and is forced to acknowledge it in a public way.

I totally agree with @nick on this. Apple has become a greedy corporate entity since we lost Jobs. It takes a class action suit to get them to do or honor almost any factory defect. They hide it from the consumers. They keep it in court for three years and then only honor a law suit for four years from the date of purchase. This law suit was on the 15" machines but is also present on the 13" machines but is not being covered: macbook pro & video: https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro...

The hard drive/IR cables on both the 13" & 15" MBP from 2010 -12 were both defective and poorly protected and to date Apple is only covering the 13" 2012 and you have to fight for that.

What they do is wait 3 years for a internal memo, get sued, drag it out for a year and then settle when most people are no longer qualified or threw the machine out and gave up. You are forced to pay for the repair and hope for a refund later, wait for the lawsuit and be disqualified for being "too old".

The other option is to take a vacation in CA with your busted Mac, take it to the Genius bar and have it repaired there. The problem is if it dies in 90 days (it probably will) you have to do it over and over again. Most people will not go to California to repair these defects past 5 years, and Apple knows this. It's also very expensive.

HP is just as guilty, but they also take it one step further. Deny it for 3-4 years straight, get sued and acknowledge it at 5 years when most of the parts are EOL and they no longer repair the issue. It's like Apple took notes from HP.

There so focused on Form they have lost sight on Function as well as common sense Engineering & Design

Forget about us repair hounds. Just think of the costs they add just to them selves in poor serviceability. Apple could easily trim the cost of manufacturing as well as defect repairs by better up front design for serviceability. They had the right idea with the magnets holding the display on the iMac's then they went cheap with the tape which in the long haul cost more! But the problem is they can't see it cost them more! So sad ... The plastic washers holding the springs in the stand hinge is in the same vein, going cheap where it shouldn't have been done. I could have created a cheaper solution and still had a way to offer a VESA mount kit.

This is where Steve Job's pressed his engineers to go back and fix it before it went out the door, where as Jony Ive is to high in the Ether to even see these basic issues!
