How can I reduce shipping costs?

Even if I add a $5 tool that weighs <30g, the shopping cart will add $76 (or more) shipping charges.

If I can't find a way around that then it's pointless trying to buy anything from iFixit.

Am I doing something wrong, or does shipping simply include some kind of tax for the 95% of the planet living outside the US?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Try the EU store front: IFIXIT UK see if its cheaper that way.

Living in Australia does complicate shipping and you have both a GST and duty tax on imported goods. The good news is you can recover some of them using this form: Import Duty Refund

The EU store has higher prices than the US store for identical products (after currency conversion), and will not reveal shipping costs until the payment authorisation stage of checkout.

What I was able to access easily was the list of countries that they can ship to. Sadly it does NOT include Australia.

So to buy directly from iFixit, it seems I need to use the US store AND pay an additional $76 for every order.

For reference, GST in Australia is 10%, and import duties are (typically) <3%. So on (for example) a $7 item, it wouldn't even push the price up to $8, so these certainly do NOT account for a $76 charge added with the very first item in the cart, and regardless of the item's value.

I was unable to find anything on iFixit.com about free postage when ordering over a fixed value.

Basically iFixit has completely priced themselves out of availability for any customers outside North America and Europe.

Did you include the conversion between US and Australian dollar? XE Currency Converter: AUD to USD

Excellent! I've never even heard of a Import Duty Refund. This could be a real game changer in a lot of countries.

@mayer - If you go to Canada you get hit with a VAT that Canadians need to pay within country. As a US citizen you can submit a form before you leave to recover some of it.

Not all countries offer tax rebates! Either as a traveler or when ordering out of country products. As an example if you buy some leather goods in Italy and you have it shipped back home you need to pay customs duties & import tax which are not refundable! But, if you wear it on the plane back you wouldn't! ;-}
